Today is #211Day, and we're taking a moment to celebrate the incredible impact of 2-1-1 services in our communities. At HomeAid, we understand the vital role that 2-1-1 plays in connecting individuals and families facing homelessness with the resources they need to get back on their feet. While 9-1-1 is widely known, not everyone is familiar with 2-1-1, the vital service for non-emergency life challenges. Whether it's job loss, illness, or other unforeseen events, 2-1-1 offers support when you're unsure where to turn. From providing information on emergency shelters and housing assistance to connecting individuals with health and human services, 2-1-1 is a lifesaving resource for those in need. Childhood homelessness is real, and it's not always who you think it is. Kids living on a friend's couch or with their parents in a hotel/motel are not OK. The effects of inflation are only making this worse because affordable housing is largely unavailable for most who need it. We're seeing PA childhood homelessness rise drastically, and not just in urban areas like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, but in suburbs and rural areas that are even less prepared to support families living in crisis. It's never too late to look at your own community to see where you can help. There are programs and people willing to help, but there's always a need for more support, especially closing in on the holidays. End homelessness in America. We believe ending homelessness in America begins with a sandwich. Our goal, beyond simply providing a PB&J sandwich to those in need, is to acknowledge and recognize the often overlooked homeless individuals and families in our community. When you see those experiencing homeless, one of the questions you may ask yourself is, “What more can I do?” We pray that what begins with a PB&J sandwich grows into much more for those who serve. In small ways, each of us can address homelessness in America. And together, we can end it. Our approach covers three initiatives to fulfill our vision: Educate Advocate Allocate Education represents increasing public awareness. Advocate is increasing support to not only host a PB&J Day, but to seek policy change and expanded community support to develop solutions. Allocate is the giving of our time, talent, and treasure (physical or monetary resources) to support PB&J Days and beyond. As we continue to highlight that housing is essential for every human being, we must also understand the complexities of being unhoused. One of the fastest-growing populations suffering from homelessness is seniors. With inflation impacting everyone, it hits those on fixed incomes the hardest. What saddens me most is that as you age, your body starts to decline. Can you imagine being homeless with limited access to medical care and nowhere to heal from your medical conditions? Through Medi-Cal reform, temporary solutions like Post-Hospitalization funding can provide individuals with temporary housing as they heal, while simultaneously working towards permanent housing solutions to ensure they do not return to homelessness. Let’s spend more time being understanding and take action to help our fellow man.
