The construction sector is looking towards renewable energy systems such as wind, solar and geothermal, as a means of improving energy efficiency and minimising its carbon footprint. By integrating renewable energy systems into construction activities, project managers can reduce their dependency on traditional energy sources such as fossil fuels and nuclear. In addition to integrating these into the building designs, renewable energy systems can also be used to power construction sites. Solar panels, for instance, can be installed on rooftops to generate electricity, reducing reliance on the grid and lowering long term utility costs. This can be especially beneficial for construction sites within remote areas or in areas which have limited access to traditional energy sources. To further support the sustainability outcomes aimed for by renewable energy sources, the construction sector can introduce the use of sustainable building materials such as wood, recycled steel and bamboo, which can support the buildings receive sustainability certifications such as LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and BREEAM (Building Research Established Environmental Assessment Method). The use of renewable systems in construction has a range of far reaching benefits that extend beyond the energy savings that are experienced within the projects and buildings themselves. The use of these system can support reductions in the carbon footprint of the development projects in question, thus contributing to emissions savings which support global climate change goals. Additionally, the use of renewable energy sources can also improve the reliance and resilience of construction sites as they can leveraged as a form of backup power during emergencies. For instance, batteries or pumped hydro storage can be used as substitute for primary power sources during a power outages to ensure that buildings do not experience experience downtimes. This ensures that operations can be maintained and prevents safety hazards. A further benefit afforded by the introduction of renewable energy systems in the construction sector is that it enables job creation and stimulates economic growth. How does concrete improve renewable infrastructure? Concrete is playing a key role in the clean energy transition. Our innovative low-carbon concrete, ECOPact, which offers 30% less CO2 than the market standard, is enabling the construction of safe, reliable, and cost-effective renewable energy infrastructure. A prime example is Holcim’s recent collaboration with Sabowind, a leading wind energy supplier and operator. Sabowind used 4,200 m³ of ECOPact concrete to construct 13 wind turbine foundations for a new wind farm in Markowice, Poland. This project ensured sturdy foundations and achieved a 31% reduction in emissions during construction – a remarkable achievement! The demand for renewable energy is skyrocketing. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), by 2050, nearly 90% of the world's electricity will come from renewable sources, with solar and wind accounting for 70% of this total. We need durable, versatile, and cost-effective materials like concrete to meet these ambitious net-zero goals. I find it incredibly rewarding to see how our efforts with ECOPact are making a tangible impact everywhere. Power purchase agreement (PPA) A PPA is simply a Capex free agreement that is signed between the business owner and the solar services provider and works on the basis of a rental, where the business owner only pays for the energy used at a tariff that is up to 50% cheaper than Eskom. We offer PPAs with multiple terms, including 10, 12, 15, 20-year periods. We maintain ownership of the solar system until the end of the agreement, with the option of purchasing the system at several increments throughout this period.
