Each year on the third Monday in January, NIU commemorates the life, legacy, and dream of one of our most respected leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service (MLK Day) is the only federal holiday that is designated by Congress as a National Day of Service – a “day on, not a day off.” Coretta Scott King said, “The greatest birthday gifts my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.”
This service strengthens our communities, empowers individuals, helps bridge barriers, creates solutions, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of community. Dr. King popularized the notion of a "Beloved Community" as a society based on justice, equal opportunity, and love for one's fellow human beings. These acts of service break down barriers by bringing people from different backgrounds together and benefits all that choose to serve.
On Monday 15 January, and the days surrounding, there are many ways to contribute to your community and to serve those in need. Please see below for some ideas:
- Serve in Your Community – Visit your town or city’s website or State Service Commission’s website for details.
- Donate or Volunteer Safely with Food Banks and Pantries - Visit feedingamerica.org or Food Pantries to find an organization near you.
- Deliver Meals and Groceries to Vulnerable Seniors - Help out someone you know or contact your local Meals on Wheels to learn ways to volunteer.
- Stay in Touch - Check on your neighbors, friends, and family, especially those who are older or maybe alone. A phone call, text, or a conversation through the door could brighten their day.
