I’m now five weeks into my new job at the NEC Group and I’ve been loving learning all about our venues, with a particular focus on the beautiful city-centre venue The ICC Birmingham. Put very simply, my job is to promote not just our venues but also Birmingham as the ideal destination to host any kind of event. So, this is what I have learned: Quite simply, Birmingham is awesome. I knew that already as a Brummie but I think everyone else should too! It welcomes over 1 million international visitors each year and has a booming economy. What’s more, its central location and excellent transport links make it incredibly accessible by air, rail or car – in fact 90% of the UK’s population live within a four-hour drive of Birmingham! As for the ICC itself, it’s considered to be one of Europe’s premier conference venues and has flexible space to accommodate from 10 to 2,000+ delegates. Plus, the location is unbeatable with stunning canal views, vibrant bars and restaurants right next door, and get this: award-winning catering (think fresh, local, and seriously delicious - over 650 awards can't be wrong!). 80% of the food is sourced from local suppliers meaning it is not only fresh but environmentally friendly. Want to know what event planners do during the hot summer months in Miami.... We visit every new venue in town. Let me tell you, Miami has a shortage of event venues, especially ones that can fit 300 people and more. During big city events like Art Basel and F1, we sometimes resort to renting empty lots and building temporary structures for our corporate clients. So every summer, I go hunting for what venues have opened that I can offer my picky corporate clients. I take the walkthrough videos, put them in our drive and send them out; hoping that they like something that already had a Certificate of Occupancy and avoids me the headaches of a temp structure and visits to the city.
