Timeless Insights for CISOs and Cyber Security Teams Chapter 3 - This is the third post in my series on Timeless Cybersecurity Insights. The previous posts received positive feedback. Thank you to everyone who read and shared. In the past. I wrote an article on "Know Your Enemies" which was published in the esteemed Cyber Defense Magazine, in the special edition for the RSA conference (link attached - page 41). The main message in the article was that the military thinker, Sun Tzu, wrote in the fifth century in his book "The Art of War" (a must-read for every military person and anyone dealing with cyber) that to win a battle, you must know your enemy, but first you must know yourself. Sun Tzu is so clear and logical, yet unfortunately so unimplemented even in 2024. I meet many CISOs worldwide and often find gaps in their understanding of the organizations they're entrusted with. This understanding should not only be at the technical level but also at the business level to comprehend the organization more broadly and deeply. Only after thoroughly understanding the organization, its goals, processes, people, and all organizational technologies and infrastructures, can you move forward to the critical stage of "know your enemies." I prefer to call it "intelligence-based cybersecurity," a concept I've advocated for many years. My working assumption is that without in-depth intelligence about the attack players relevant to your organization, alongside a broad and deep familiarity with your organization, you as a CISO cannot truly assess and effectively deal with the cyber challenges facing your organization's development. Usually, when we talk about cyber intelligence today, we narrow it down to IOCs, and perhaps the outstanding ones look at TTPs as well. In conclusion, cyber attacks happen in the cyber world, but those behind the keyboard are people we call "attack players." If you get to know in depth who they are, you will certainly perform your task as a CISO better, with improved efficiency and effectiveness.
