This has significant implications for construction and residence in the Arctic and especially e.g. Alaska's North Slope and Northwest Arctic boroughs.

Ramboll always provides my team with incredibly interesting projects to work on. Possibly the one that provides us all with a huge sense of pride is the sustainability support we provide for the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) across a whole raft of projects. In some small way we know we are supporting their critically important work. The challenges of sustainability in the Antarctic can be unique such as temperatures that only provide a small window each year when you can physically work on upgrades. Some challenges with working in the Antarctic are absolutely not unique they are relevant to all of us in our everyday life but are more keenly felt in the Antarctic. For example, you can't just throw your waste materials away. There is no where to hide it. You have to apply circular thinking to all material consumption. Or you just can't go consuming materials with reckless abandon as if you have 2 planets. You really must maximise the value of every precious kilo of materials you can find locally. Or every act of progress, in terms of improving human infrastructure, can and often will have a direct and real impact on fragile and beautiful ecosystems. So you have to tread lightly and with purpose. As part of our global, world changing, climate transition we will invest trillions in new infrastructure, replacing our entire energy generation system, building flood defenses etc. A solid sustainability principle for all this work is to build it as if you were building in the Antarctic! A big shout out to Emilia Gabriel, Oksana Ananyeva, Thomas Mitchell, Bram Miller, Fiona Baillie, Ellie Hathaway, Rebecca Goodyear, Sarah Pattinson and the many other colleagues from Ramboll who support BAS with passion and pride.

In Australia, we face a dual challenge with conflicting objectives. On one hand, there is a pressing need to construct an additional 1.2 million homes within the next 5-10 years, while on the other hand, there is a crucial mandate to reduce our carbon footprint. A potential solution lies in the concept of constructing new rooftop homes as a means to generate funds for the preservation of our aging buildings. We must engage in discussions about the feasibility of integrating airspace development into Australia as an innovative approach to address both housing demands and environmental concerns.
