Happy #InternationalWomensDay and #FemTechFriday! ♀ This International Women’s Day, I’m honored to be in the company of 17 other trailblazing women on Guidea’s FemTech Pioneers t-shirt! This (non-exhaustive) group of women includes scientists 🔬, business executives 💼, healthcare providers 🩺, and policy advocates 📢. We’re united by the common goal of improving women’s health through tech-based solutions and innovation—and we’re succeeding. FemTech is growing at an astronomical rate, with 50% of its 1000+ active companies founded in the last five years. 85% of FemTech companies are female-founded, and women’s health innovation will only continue to grow as the number of women in STEM, entrepreneurship, and finance increases. Why does all of this matter? Because when people hear “women’s health” they think breast health and reproductive health—even though our entire physiology is different than men’s. Because clinical trials in the US weren’t required to include women until 1993, and most cell lines and animal models in medical research are still male. Because even though menstrual disorders impact over half of American women, they receive 0.00004% of NIH funding. In honor of the day, I would love to celebrate the impact #FemTech has had on real women’s lives. Fertility companies, how many babies have you helped make?
