Talking about #affordability, we just released new resources to address health care affordability and out-of-pocket costs! 👏 We’ve listened to thousands of people across the country, and time and again, they've shared that cost is their biggest worry when it comes to health care. That’s why we developed solutions to help ease these concerns and provide peace of mind, including 𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝘁-𝗼𝗳-𝗽𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲𝘀. Policymakers at both the state and federal levels are uniquely positioned to pursue solutions to build upon existing efforts to address this affordability crisis. Here are just a couple of policy principles we believe can ultimately improve health care access and cost: Lowering high hospital prices by: ☆ Promoting and/or expanding site-neutrality in payment ☆ Limiting or prohibiting hospital facility fees Ensuring access to essential services by: ☆ Encouraging uptake of high-value services ☆ Protecting access to preventive services 🔎 Ready for more detailed information on our recommendations? Mixed-methods researcher interested in decision-making, health policy and regulations, and health inequities
The 2024 Arizona Rural & Public Health Policy Forum was an excellent way to gain insight into Arizona's regulatory and policy updates for the new year. Understanding a state's acute and chronic needs in its healthcare system helps the community plan and focus more effectively. We heard updates from the Governor's health policy advisor, the directors of AHCCCS and ADHS, experts from the Arizona Telemedicine Program, and many more. One key takeaway from the forum is that while we have long-term goals--such as increasing Accountability/Trust and growing the Workforce--our public health leaders are also using individualized strategies every day to deal with the acute problems that face rural communities' abilities to access healthcare. #ruralhealthcare #ruralhealth #telemedicine #doxy.me #healthpolicy

When Rush University Medical Center in Chicago decided to re-engineer its delivery systems to address population health, reduce health inequities, and combat chronic diseases while controlling healthcare costs, they connected with the Home Centered Care Institute. Together, they launched the innovative Rush@Home house call program. Based on a six-month study, the Rush@Home program achieved the following: • 34% potential lower cost • 18% fewer hospitalizations • 21% reduction in ED visits • 4.6% fewer readmissions Total Program Savings • Total Actual Six-Month Savings: $761,000 • Total Potential Annualized Savings: Over $1.5 million Based on these results, a program with 200 MSSP patients would generate over $3 million in savings. When health systems, population-health service providers and health plans are on the same page, good things happen. Dr. Stephanie Duggan MD, FACEP, FAAPL, CPE, Chief Clinical Officer, highlighted some achievements of SSM Health’s partnership with Navvis (healthcare) at the recent Medica ACO Summit: • Standardized, systematic approaches to population health • Nearly doubling the number of patients engaged in value-based care over three years • Clinical quality measures in the top 90% Working together, we can achieve the Quadruple Aim of American health care – higher quality, improved patient experience, lower costs, and reduced clinician burnout. I consider my colleague Julia Ivanova, PhD to be one of the few public health experts who can explain concepts in non-technical terminology. And because of that, her explanation of findings from the 2024 Arizona Rural and Public Health Policy is fascinating. In her explanation, she discusses how public health leaders are employing various individualized strategies to address the acute problems that hinder rural communities' access to healthcare. These strategies often cater to the unique challenges faced by rural areas, including geographical isolation, limited healthcare infrastructure, and workforce shortages. Some of those approaches include: -Telehealth Expansion projects including Mobile Health Clinics -Recruitment and Retention of Healthcare Professionals -Training and using more Community Health Workers who understand local cultures and languages -Forming more partnerships with local organizations, schools, businesses and health systems -Advocating for policies that improve rural healthcare infrastructure, increase funding, and support innovative care models -Tailoring education programs to address specific health issues prevalent in rural areas -Investing in healthcare facilities, technology, and broadband internet for telehealth services. -Implementing care models like Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH) and Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) The ultimate goal of the conference was to show that these strategies require a deep understanding of the specific needs and resources of rural communities. But with research like Julia's, the ball is pushed one step closer toward implementing solutions that can significantly impact the health and wellbeing of rural populations.
