Announcement: Hey everyone! Today, I received notification about my Creative Catalyst grant application, unfortunately, it was not successful. I wish the very best of success to those entries that received funding. The application was completed by myself during my dissertation project, so I was literally juggling my dissertation and two other modules while also completing and receiving feedback from Eagle Labs advice sessions. It was a very challenging application, reportedly one of the most difficult to fill in, so I'm proud of myself for managing everything. I went through different emotions this morning when I received the notification. I was saddened, not so much for me and my solo dev studio, but for the missed opportunity that this grant could have brought. I can continue to work on new and current projects, but I was more upset because of the potential to create junior jobs and hire freelancers. Most importantly, I believed in the project and its ability to help people. My project submission, Happy Places, is an idea to support people suffering from anxiety, stress, and mental health issues. I aimed to create a game offering a variety of "Happy Places" for relaxation, using techniques of CBT to help users deal with stress and anxiety. I had secured interest from my university psychology department to help as an advisory board should the grant have been forthcoming. My desire was to reach out and work with mental health charities and, hopefully in the future, with the NHS, although I understand that may have been extremely difficult. Today besides me getting this news, I had to share the news with various stakeholders, which was a new experience for me. So, what's happening now? Well, the project sadly can't continue without funding. The level of work and different key stakeholders needed for this project to have a meaningful impact requires funding. I will continue to work on trying to secure funding for this project as I really believe in it. Perhaps now, without so many things pulling me in 100 different directions, I can spend more time working on a smaller-scale prototype to showcase more clearly what I am attempting to create. It's finding the time to do so. Overall, I am super proud of the application, my ability as a director to apply for two grant applications since November (This and UK Games Fund Prototype for Rise of the Village Hero - both rejections but useful lessons), especially this one, which was really hard to submit and very requirements-heavy. All this while managing everything else as well was quite an achievement. I am saddened a little but hopeful, keen and I will continue to work hard to try to make Happy Places and other projects that my studio makes a success. Thank you for reading my announcement. After a few really rough years for independent film, executives are starting to see positive momentum. Longlegs delivered the biggest opening in Neon's history. Civil War is one of A24's highest-grossing movies ever. Late Night with the Devil is IFC Films' top film in a decade. Thelma is one of Magnolia's highest-grossing films ever. I spoke to executives across the film business about why these movies are working and how they've adapted their strategies to a time when fewer people are going to theaters. https://t.co/cHUSkJ7lkn

Part Four of our 'Building for Scale' Miniseries covers the changes that surface once your game team starts growing 🧑💻📈 As studios scale, teams that thrive need to continuously improve their ways of working. These improvements are exciting, but often not without side-effects. Savvy developers mitigate these and give themselves the best chance of success by planning for the scaling of their team ahead of time, and ensure that when that time comes, their workflows, their game, and the people working on it are properly primed for scale. 🚀 Movie Festival Problem Solved with Greedy Algorithm! 🎬📅 Today, I tackled a movie scheduling problem using a greedy algorithm. The objective was to select the maximum number of non-overlapping movies from a given set, where each movie has a start and end time. Approach: Input Handling: I took in the start and end times of all the movies. Sorting by End Time: To maximize the number of movies watched, I sorted the movies based on their ending time. This ensures we always pick the movie that leaves the most room for future selections. Greedy Selection: Using a greedy approach, I selected movies that start after the previously selected movie ends. This ensures no overlap and maximizes the number of movies. #Coding #Algorithms #GreedyAlgorithm #CPP #ProblemSolving #100DaysOfCode #LinkedInLearning

Japanese-to-English Audiovisual Translator | Subtitle/SDH Author | Game Localizer | Dad-Band Drummer
I know we're late to the party, but my family and I are thoroughly enjoying the show "Devs" on Hulu. But what is up with the SDH timing?! It starts okay but rapidly goes out of sync, rendering the captions unwatchable. And I'm not talking about a few forgivable frames. This sync issue is so bad that the actors' mouths aren't even moving when the captions are displayed. Yeesh! To make sure it wasn't a problem with my Roku device, I double-checked on my Windows PC, and the exact same problem occurred. Either Hulu cheaped out on the caption authoring or didn't do a QC pass. Or maybe they committed the ultimate sin of both combined. Whatever the case, this seriously needs to be fixed! I mean, your service isn't free, is it? Can you please make the necessary investment to fix this? This isn't the first time I've noticed problems with your SDH captions and subtitles, Hulu. You would do well to take some notes from Netflix on how to properly handle SDH and subtitle authoring. There are plenty of capable SDH captioners out there who would be happy to help you. For a reasonable fee, you could have the captions retimed in a professional manner. 'Cause right now, it looks like amateur night, and that's a bad look for any company, especially a major streamer like Hulu. Just sayin'... https://lnkd.in/gnp8Bb6q #SDH #Hulu #Netflix #Devs #captioning #cc #subtitles #streamingservice

Here's my portion of the Soundtrack for A Lark in the Park After Dark! I had so much fun trying to fuse electronic elements with an old school fairground organ, while also trying to give some feline feel to the tracks. Overall, this may be my favorite work I've done yet! #gameaudio #GameJam #indiegames #musiccomposition

Global Game Jam 2024 Retrospective! Fun event put on by the GGJ organizers and Seattle Indies this year! Great to be able to go there in person at Digipen also. I was really happy with what we put out also with a team of people put together on the spot on the first day. We were inspired by stuff like Game and Wario especially with the “Make Me Laugh” theme pushing us toward couch-competitive style minigames that are always fun and a good laugh. Can check it out here! https://lnkd.in/dxtQEubM Overall I’d say, the good: 1. The newest 2023 Wwise version adding Web targeting for Unity worked fantastic, after using old versions from 2022 it felt like a big upgrade. 2. Happy with most of the sounds I made in such a short time, over 100 media items in the project because so many mini-games and events, especially loved the sounds in the chair racing pinball minigame! 3. Teammates were great, Rey Perez made some fantastic and silly music, Conor Brennan, Tal Wilfand, Lyra Riley did some great programming work with the minigames and tying everything together. The not so good: 1. Mixing remote and local team setup is difficult, as remote people have a harder time communicating directly with the local team. As someone who doesn’t have a laptop, commuting 90 minutes for the event in both directions was extra strenuous! 2. A balanced team definitely feels important. We ended up with something like 8 programmers I believe in total, and while good, it meant our singular artist, composer, and myself felt like crunching from the start to get all the assets for the 4 different minigames. Also shoutout to Jake for brainstorming and keeping people in contact, and Shelby for dealing with all the art we needed for the game!
