Building a team to support you is not just about recruiting. It’s also about defining the role and responsibilities of the new recruits and supporting them as they start their journey in your business. This is an example of what can happen if you don’t do this. The founder of the engineering business recruited a high calibre Managing Director to run the company on his behalf. Weary of formal organisation structures and job descriptions the founder was reluctant to formally define the responsibilities and authority of the new MD. He was very impatient and kept interfering whenever he disagreed with the MD’s approach. A conflictual relationship developed between them, as they became increasingly frustrated with each other. This had negative repercussions on the business and in the end the MD had to leave. Building a team to support you requires doing things differently, allowing vulnerability, and ceding control of certain decisions. Are you familiar with the Eisenhower Decision Matrix? I became familiar with it when I worked at Johnson County, KS Government. It's a way to categorize (and then prioritize) the work that you do. I've been thinking about it a lot as I continue to struggle with my most significant challenge as a #founder: working in the business vs. working on the business. I think my experience is pretty typical: I spend most of my time working in Q1 and Q3 - everything is urgent, some is important and some not. I try to stay away from Q2 because that's essentially a waste of time. I want to be spending more time in Q4, because that's where long-term strategic planning, vision casting, self-care, and big picture dreaming can happen. A business can't succeed (and a leader can't be healthy) without Q4 time. Right now, I'm trying to decrease the amount of Q1 tasks in my life and spend the majority of my time in Q3 and Q4. That's where the most growth, change, and success happens. It's also the most effective use of time and, time is an expensive commodity. I need to seek out the tasks and projects with the highest ROI for both Blazer Strategies and GROUNDHOUSE COFFEE INC. Any tips for spending more time in Q4? That's the hardest for sure!
