The CAPES Signature Project tests the effectiveness of @JasprHealth, a patient-facing tablet-based application, in the Emergency Department (ED). A chat bot guide patients through a suicide risk assessment, a safety plan, and lethal means counseling all while waiting for care.
Jaspr also provides access to a menu of skills videos to manage distress, and a library of racially and culturally diverse, inspirational videos of people with suicide-centered lived experience. After leaving the ED, the patient can access their safety plan, skills videos, and shared stories on the Jaspr at home app.
First, we are testing if Jaspr improves suicide outcomes under ideal conditions by comparing patients who receive routine ED care (n=335) to those who receive routine ED care plus Jaspr (n=335) when given by research staff at UMass Memorial. Then, we’ll test how well Jaspr improves outcomes when given as part of routine clinical care at four EDs in Colorado and Ohio (N=28,000).
