Retailer Highlight - Smalls Sliders 🍔 🍟 🥤🍔 🥓
I first heard of Smalls Sliders when I went to the LSU vs Arkansas football game with our Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen folks and some buddies. I saw it in the daytime and didn’t think much of it other than it looked neat and kind of reminded me of Garage Bar park in Las Vegas, but then later that day passed one in Baton Rouge that had 25+ cars in the line.
So I decided to look more into it. My synopsis as someone that loves retail - they have an attribute that the most successful brands out there currently have:
Do something very niche and do it really really really well.
And here’s how they seemingly are doing it:
Smalls accelerates by focusing very heavily on product/experience and by giving franchisees a successful playbook.
Operators have to focus very little on the construction of their building - it’s a “can” that they can replicate over and over with some string lights and outdoor seating. The building is 800 square feet and pre-fabricated and they can go on less than ½ an acre if they can share parking.
You’ll see this type of modular, replicable design with some of the new coffee concepts popping up like Seven Brew. In the competitive environment today of restaurants, this is awesome.
Their menu is replicable: burger sliders, with a signature “smauce” – smalls sauce – that gets great reviews with massive russet potato fries and milkshakes. The only customization that you can really do is make it bigger and add bacon. They are incredibly efficient with their wait times, and they have an uber consistent product because that is all they do.
Go look up pics. It’ll make you hungry.
They are able to expand quickly through low costs and efficient processes. Real Estate construction is way less expensive than their competitors, way faster, and way easier to duplicate. Product and Ops (the killer of many franchised brands) is not way overly complicated and is not the most expensive food cost. Allowing a franchisee to walk in and deliver a super quality product.
Fun Fact: they are also backed by Drew Brees. Celebrity endorsements never hurt (especially in Saints fan territory) Also fun fact, they're now franchised by Aaron Zucker in North Carolina who I'd say is typically ahead of the curve on retail.
Coming to a corner near you, soon.
