In an interview with Bloomberg News today, Canada's natural resource minister reiterated the government's tougher stance on Chinese investment in the domestic critical minerals business. “We need to be working to solve access to capital issues, but the answer cannot be investment from Chinese state-owned industries,” said Jonathan Wilkinson. Chinese firms have pursued a string of investments in Canadian junior mining companies in recent months, suggesting that tougher federal government rules haven’t dissuaded China from delving deeper into the country’s mining sector. Transactions like Zijin Mining Group’s plans to take a 15% stake in Vancouver-based copper company Solaris Resources Inc., announced in January, are testing Canada’s national security rules. China’s Yintai Resources Co., Ltd., meanwhile, reached an agreement last month with Osino Resources Corp. to buy the Canadian gold explorer for C$368 million. Canada’s crackdown “may not have totally dissuaded the Chinese, but they will all have to go through a national security review,” Wilkinson said. https://lnkd.in/gK74fH6H

It’s so shocking that there are still a lot of people who comment on our industry who still don’t understand the nuances and differences between mineral exploration and mining. You can’t have mines without junior mineral explorers and prospectors. Seems pretty straightforward but many people are either assuming / ignoring the fact that claim staking does NOT mean you can mine/do whatever you want on crown land. Policy makers can’t ignore this, and must keep it in mind. AME will keep helping our members build strong relationships with Nations pre-exploration based on mutual respect rooted in direct, frank and respectful conversations. There's a nasty fight brewing over who will be the next leader of the International Seabed Authority, a United Nations-affiliated agency, that controls mining in international waters worldwide. The agency is preparing to consider applications for industrial-scale mining, conducted by bulldozer-like machines dropped to the ocean floor miles below the surface. While some countries are eager to move ahead, at least 25 have proposed a moratorium or “precautionary pause,” arguing that there is not enough data to ensure mining will not cause harm. Some countries are fiercely opposed to the idea of mining the world’s deepest waters while others see it as a badly needed economic opportunity. https://lnkd.in/exbiVAer

From today’s ABQ Journal New Mexico's oil-driven revenue growth is slowing, but lawmakers will still have $659.6 million in "new" money available next year, according to the latest state revenue estimates. This surplus is the difference between projected revenue and current spending levels. Economic Impact: Despite the slowing growth, the state's projected revenue for the 2025 budget year is nearly $13.4 billion, significantly higher than the current $10.2 billion budget. New Mexico's oil production in the Permian Basin continues to play a crucial role in the state's economic boom. Spending and Savings: Lawmakers have used the revenue surge to boost spending, particularly in public education, while also setting aside funds for future needs. The creation of trust funds, like the early childhood fund, provides a buffer against potential future declines in oil prices and production.
