I am a customer of this shop and have bought many physical copies of games (consoles as well) over the years due to the store's competitive prices.
However, increasingly, I find myself buying digital versions of games. This is especially so for PC games, where platforms like STEAM and EPIC.
These platforms make it so convenient to buy games digitally. EPIC literally gives out free games weekly, as long as you have an account and check in religiously.
Prices are also eye-watering during major (meaning there are promotions ALL the time) sale periods like Summer Sale.
It is a similar landscape on the console side of gaming.
For example, the PlayStation 5 has a digital only version that does not come with a disc drive. It is cheaper and you get your games via their e-stores. These digital shop fronts run sale all the time as well.
There is no headache to store the plastic cases for each game and believe me, these take up a lot of space as your game library expands.
Also, physical copies can get destroyed with breakage, mould etc.
If you have a digital copy, you just re-download the game. Theoretically, digital games live on forever. They can be patched up to the latest version instantly, whereas with a physical version, you will only know there is a patch if you pop the disc in.
My point is this - this store should not survive at all, much less thrive, if price is the deciding factor.
However, there are merits to owning physical copies of games.
- You can pass your game around to family and friends after you have finished it. (One can argue you can do the same on digital platforms like STEAM family sharing, but let's not go there).
- You can resell physical copies once you are done with the game. You save $ towards the next game and you have no clutter too!
- Rare physical copies can fetch crazy prices for collectors, especially special edition ones that come with exclusive figurines or some form of game memorabilia.
So, are you a physical or digital gamer?
I guess everyone is a bit of both, just like you need to be omni-channel in retail?
Anyone collectors interested to buy my physical copies of PS3 games, some still in their original plastic wrapping? :)
