More than two-thirds (68%) of consumers in Ireland look for an ecolabel when shopping for fish and seafood, a recent survey conducted by YouGov for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) has unveiled. Seth McCurry, senior commercial manager for MSC UK and Ireland, said, "This research confirms that there is increasing public concern around ocean health. It requires a collective effort from governments, industries, communities, and consumers to make responsible choices that support sustainable fisheries and aquaculture practices.

💡 Did you know that the ocean holds 80% of the world’s biodiversity? A healthy ocean is essential for life on Earth. It plays a key role in climate regulation and food provision. 🌊 On #WorldOceanDay we emphasise the importance of companies having tangible targets for ‘sustainable’ seafood in order to accelerate meaningful ocean action towards the #SDGs. ✅ On a positive note, transparency in the sector has improved. Almost all seafood companies assessed in the Seafood Stewardship Index disclose some of their activities and efforts towards environmentally ‘sustainable’ and ‘socially responsible’ seafood. There has been some improvement in terms of certifications, policies, and engagement activities. ❗However, our data shows that most seafood companies do not disclose SMART targets (Specific, Measurable, Ambitious, Relevant, Time-bound). Even if companies have these targets, these usually only address part of their portfolio (specific fish species), and it is not clear how this prioritisation is made. 🤝On this #WorldOceanDay we call on all companies to be both comprehensive and ambitious in defining and disclosing their environmental and social targets to ensure responsible practices are implemented for our ocean. Can you spot the difference between sustainably caught and farmed fish? Making the right choice matters for both wild and farmed varieties. Wild fish should come from areas free of overfishing and with minimal environmental impact. For farmed fish, it means controlled breeding with low environmental stress. Look out for labels like MAC for wild fish and ASC for farmed fish, endorsed by organizations like the Good Fish Foundation. These certifications set strict standards for environmental impact and fishing methods. While supermarkets like Jumbo Supermarkten, Albert Heijn and Lidl Nederland often clearly label sustainable fish, in fish shops and restaurants, it's trickier. You might have to rely on the seller's word. Despite concerns about contaminants like dioxins and PFAS, the health benefits of eating fish, as recommended by the Voedingscentrum, outweigh the risks. But, is sustainable fishing viable with a growing global population? Efforts by governments and certifications show that sustainably caught fish stocks can remain stable.
