Project Update: Fieldhouse at Memorial Village 🚧 We're excited to share an update on the Fieldhouse at Memorial Village, located on the University of North Dakota's East Campus. This five-story, mixed-use development will offer both commercial and residential spaces, complete with lounges, patios, and the Hawk's Perch, an observation deck with views of Albrecht Field, the new home of the UND women's softball team. Built in conjunction with Albrecht Field, Burian & Associates is handling the civil site design for both projects. We can't wait to see it all come together!

The challenges of Lift-slab Demolition on Fareham Multi-storey Car Park Engaged by our client Neilcott Construction Limited for Fareham Borough Council, this multi-storey car park in Osborn Road, Fareham, constructed in 1970, using lift slab construction, has presented its challenges over the course of the demolition project for HWM Group. All were foreseen, scrupulously identified and mitigated through modelling and calculation scenarios with specialist engineers. However, demolishing multi-storey car parks constructed using the lift slab method presents unique challenges compared to traditional construction techniques. Lift slab construction involves assembling precast concrete panels on the ground, then lifting them into place using hydraulic jacks onto columns to create the building's structure. While this method offers efficiency during construction, it introduces weakness and instability complexities during demolition. Bricklayers collaborate closely with builders, architects, engineers, project managers, and other construction professionals to transform ideas into structures. We like to look at our on-site work as "bringing the vision to life"... whether that's a cutting-edge new urban design to a timeless classic build. Brickit has worked on schools, hospitals, sporting grounds, community areas and even rail projects over the last little while. Throw in some restoration on older buildings into that mix as well. How you look at your craft is a game-changer... If it was simply "laying bricks", it doesn't overly inspire the team. So step back and look at how your trade contributes to the bigger picture and shift the purpose of your crew. #bricklaying #bricklayers #brickwork #tradies #construction

Our Mary Ward Legal Centre project was featured in 'First Look' in the Architects’ Journal last week. A disused 1970s four-storey office building in Stratford - previously known as Queensway House - has been transformed with a vertical extension of two extra storeys and a full refurbishment to cater for the expanding needs of Mary Ward Centre, a century old adult education charity. Mary Ward obtained a loan from the 'Skills for Londoners Capital Fund' to renovate Queensway House. Environmental considerations were crucial, requiring the reuse of the existing frame for funding approval. The two additional storeys are constructed using steel framing and concrete slab on metal deck. New steelwork strengthens the existing slab and columns, left exposed to highlight the interface between the new and existing structural modifications. An exposed structure suited the budget and low carbon design goals. We implemented a rigorous process of investigation, calculation, and verification to ensure we designed an efficient building and avoided the use of unnecessary materials. Working with the existing structure we aimed to minimise interventions, collaborating closely with the design team to utilise the buildings capacity where possible. This involved numerous design iterations and close collaboration. The frame was fully modelled in Revit, our technicians used the EOC ECO2 plug-in to calculate the volume of new material and the Structural Carbon Tool for CO2 amounts for individual elements. The refurbishment option demonstrated a 40% reduction in embodied carbon when compared to constructing a new building, excluding demolition of the frame, with the refurbishment and extension meeting LETI's targets. Mary Ward Centre provides services to 5,500 students every year. The opening of this building marked a significant milestone for Mary Ward and we're delighted to have been involved. Huge well done to all on the client and design teams, and to all of the stakeholders involved in some of the decision-making along the way. https://lnkd.in/e8CK7Vjw Beadmans LLP Curo Construction ltd AWW Featherstone, Project + Construction Management RBA Acoustics Ltd MLM Group Soils Limited Mike Davies Alison Wallis Alex O'Reilly Callum Nowell #structuralengineering #engineering #retrofit #retrofirst #refurbishment #verticalextension

Edmonton Research Park Spotlight: Chandos Construction Since 1980, Chandos Construction has fostered a collaborative and inclusive work culture that values equality, collaboration, ingenuity, and sustainability.🏗️👷 ♻️ The building and construction industry makes up ⅓ of the world’s carbon emissions. Chandos Construction has been dedicated to reducing their impact since 2010. Using Virtual Design and Construction (VDC), Chandos has effectively reduced the amount of carbon emissions by as much as 2,300 kg emitted on specific job sites. Not only does the use of VDC greatly reduce carbon emissions, it can save hundreds of thousands of dollars. By using VDC and Building Information Modelling (BIM), Chandos has been able to minimize the number of workers on site, optimize scheduling, save materials, and reduce the use of electric and gas-powered equipment. Chandos Construction understands that a sustainable today means a cleaner tomorrow. 🔍 Project Spotlight: Rockridge Redevelopment Recently, I came across a few articles shedding light on the redevelopment of the former California College of the Arts campus in Rockridge. This project aims to revitalize the historic site, creating 448 homes, offices, and a community space. The development has become a focal point in Oakland's housing debate, with diverse opinions and discussions around its impact on the community. As civil engineers, you play a pivotal role in shaping the physical and environmental aspects of such projects. What are your thoughts on the challenges and opportunities presented in this type of urban redevelopment?

🌹 Roses are red, violets are blue, Anton Kivell, this one’s for you 💘 We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate Valentines Day, than to hear from our Senior Structural Engineer, Anton about his first true love (to his beautiful wife and lovely children, this is definitely a joke. He totally loves you guys’ way more). Just 60km north of Wellington on the sometimes sunny Kāpiti Coast, please allow us to introduce the Waikanae River Bridge. --- WAIKANAE RIVER BRIDGE | KĀPITI COAST “They say you always remember your first, and for me this was my first bridge. Working closely with Ronald Wessel, Jamil Khan, and Geoff Brown, we navigated an array of challenges to deliver an innovative design for the 182m long bridge that carries SH1 across the Waikanae River. It turned out to be a bridge of many firsts: ✔ 1st 3.0m dia bored piles in NZ with DH40 hoops ✔ 1st 1800 Super-tee’s in NZ ✔ 1st Precast – Post-tensioned crossheads in NZ The innovations required to get the design to work are now mostly hidden below the ground or in concrete. When you are designing for ground accelerations of 0.74g, 2km from a fault line, in ground that will liquefy to depths of 10-15m, the standard solutions were found to be lacking or prohibitively expensive. This bridge taught me that doing things because “that’s the way we have always done it” creates false boundaries in engineering. Sometimes we have to dare to push beyond those boundaries. To do this in a meaningful and safe way requires a comprehensive and robust understanding of the fundamental principles of design, not just rules of thumb. The Waikanae River Bridge on the Kāpiti Expressway will always be a Bridge that I love.” #WeLoveBridge #Engineering #Infrastructure #StructuralDesign #BridgeConstruction #CivilEngineering #Hoffcon
