How do airports manage fuel supply? Scott Carrington, AUS Fuel chair, shares how our collaboration with Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and AUS Fuel is making a difference in safeguarding on-airport fuel supply. The new AUS fuel systems enhance fuel delivery efficiency to reduce flight delays, operational impacts and costs. These upgrades prepare AUS for future demands and smoother operations for travelers. Learn how our collaboration with AUS Fuel and the airport was key. https://hubs.li/Q02D2kDQ0 #Aviation #Airports #AviationFuel #FuelStorage

Yesterday, the UK Government unveiled a ne plan to see 10% of all fuel used in flights departing from the UK consist of sustainable sources by 2030, with targets starting to come into force from January 2025 (subject to parliamentary approval). This could result in 1.2m tonnes of sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) being supplied to the UK airline industry annually. No doubt a positive step, which could see the SAF industry adding £1.8bn to the economy and creating over 10,000 jobs. Do the maths, though. SAFs can result in a 70% reduction in emissions compared to traditional jet fuel. 70% of 10% is... well, not enough. We need to do more to accelerate the development of true net-zero aviation. This is why we launched The Freedom Flight Prize. Setting a target of 10% by 2030 is a step in the right direction for sure, but we can do better. We must do better. https://lnkd.in/dudw5Sf #carbonfootprint #netzero #netzeroflight #netzeroaviation #aviation #freedomflightprize #sustainability #sustainableaviation

Jet2 PLC (AIM:JET2) has said demand for the summer is stronger than last year, signalling the travel boom continues. Bookings for package holidays are up by 13%, Jet2 said in a statement, while flight-only passengers have increased by 18%. This is as the airline’s capacity is 12.3% higher than a year ago at 17.1 million seats, with the summer season 55% sold so far, leaving load factors 1% ahead of this time last year. Alongside this, Jet2 said pricing had seen a “modest increase”, easing cost pressures, while over 80% of fuel was already bought for the year, shielding against price shocks from the likes of tensions in the Middle East. “Operationally, we are well set for a successful Summer 2024 season with the required number of aircraft to support our flying programme and sufficient, fully trained resources to operate,” Jet2 said. Jet2 added group profit for the year just gone was set to come in... More at #Proactive #ProactiveInvestors http://ow.ly/c1um105qBv2

If the global #aviation industry is flying high, why is jet demand flying so low? By almost all measures we can say that the global aviation industry has recovered to pre-COVID levels as of 2Q 2024. Comparing year to date statistics with 2019 there are firm signs of recovery; total commercial flights have averaged 13% higher; airline capacity proxied by flown seats is up 1%; revenue passenger kilometres (RPKs) recovered fully to 2019 levels in February 2024 and have since hovered around the 2019 levels; passenger load factors (PLFs) are now at the average of 81%. If global air travel has now recovered, where has all the #jetfuel #demand gone? We forecast that total jet/kero demand will still be some 330 kb/d lower than demand in 2019 at of the end of 2024. We have previously discussed in depth, in our Product Alerts, some of the structural changes, including increasing #fuel efficiency of the modern fleet following upgrades. However, in our view another structural factor weighing on #jet demand are global dislocations and changing flight preferences following the pandemic. Comparing expected 2Q aviation capacity with 2019 levels by main geographies, there are two key regions that are yet to recover. ✈ Working with easyJet and cross-industry partners, we’re proud to support a ground-breaking airside #hydrogen refueling trial, successfully completed at Bristol Airport – the first trial of its kind at a major U.K. airport. Hydrogen was used to refuel and power ground support equipment servicing easyJet passenger aircraft. The data and insight gathered will support development of industry best practice standards for hydrogen’s use on an airfield. #OurJacobs Senior Vice President Kate Kenny says: “By investing in understanding the use of hydrogen in a live airport environment we hope to help move aviation an important step closer to decarbonization and a #NetZero future.” Read more: http://jcob.co/LczJ50R97xy Cranfield Aerospace Solutions Cranfield University Connected Places Catapult DHL Supply Chain Fuel Cell Systems Ltd. In late 2023, Virgin Atlantic became the first ever airline to power a transatlantic flight solely using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). This was the culmination of months of planning and signified a milestone in the development of the new technology, with it comprising an ever-increasing proportion of the global aviation fuel mix. The aspirations for the fuel are sky-high, but are they realistic? Here, Skylark's Adam Swede discusses the future plans for SAF, and the extent to which it truly has the potential to minimise the carbon output of the aviation industry. SUSTAINABILITY: Federal Aviation Administration awards US$2.5m to Ontario International Airport to increase #sustainability The money is through FAA’s Voluntary Airport Low-Emission (#VALE) Program and will be used to replace 22 pre-conditioned air (PCA) units – external heating, cooling and dehumidifying devices that control temperatures and keep jetways and #planes comfortable when #aircraft are parked at the gate. Alan Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority board of commissioners, said, “We are deeply appreciative to the FAA and to Congresswoman Norma Torres, who has played such a critical role in securing funding for ONT as we meet the needs of this dynamic region we serve. The VALE Program funding will allow us to replace older PCA units with state-of-the-art, high energy-efficient models that reduce #emissions and improve air quality.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ejNMnwM5 #Aviation #Airlines #Airports #Passengers #Transportation #Technology #AviationIndustry #AirportDesign #Travel #Technology #PTExpoConf #ukimediaevents

This week, we heard that the airline Air New Zealand made the difficult decision to abandon its 2030 interim climate target 📉 due to challenges in acquiring new, fuel-efficient aircraft and the limited availability of alternative fuels. This news highlights the aviation industry's complex challenges in balancing sustainability goals with operational realities. Other airlines will not be immune to the realities of adopting alternative fuels and acquiring new aircraft technologies. The decision to scrap its climate targets raises several key questions and challenges for the broader aviation industry, particularly from an #infrastructure perspective: ⛽ Feasibility of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Infrastructure: The need for affordable and readily available SAF is a significant roadblock for airlines striving to reduce emissions. 🏗 Airport Infrastructure Upgrades: As airlines transition to electric or hydrogen-powered aircraft, airports will need to adapt their infrastructure to accommodate these new technologies. 📜 Regulatory and Policy Frameworks: Air New Zealand's decision underscores the need for clear and supportive regulatory frameworks that incentivise the adoption of sustainable aviation technologies. 💷 Balancing Sustainability and Financial Viability: The aviation industry must balance ambitious sustainability goals with the financial realities of transitioning to a low-carbon future. #Makingthedifference #AviationInfrastructure #SustainableAviation #NetZeroAviation #SAF
