Buro Happold helped to create a vision for a sustainable new urban neighbourhood for the Tempelhof quarter of Berlin – developing measures to minimise CO2 emissions and ensure the circular use of resources for the 10-hectare development, which will deliver new housing and modernise and expand public facilities around Tempelhof town hall. The sustainability and urban planning team at Buro Happold compared the environmental impacts of different scenarios over a lifecycle of 50 years. This included a comparison between the benefits of reusing existing structures against demolition with new construction in terms of overall carbon intensity. Over the next few years, a new urban quarter will be built in the centre of Tempelhof district in Berlin. "Neue Mitte Tempelhof" will be developed with the principles of circularity and climate-neutrality to achieve the city's climate targets. Spanning an area of 10 hectares, new living space will be created, and public facilities will be modernised and expanded. With a clear focus on sustainability, our team at Buro Happold developed measures that significantly reduce CO2 emissions and promote the circular use of resources for the project. The studies our team conducted demonstrate that the scenario of an optimised new construction over the life cycle of the quarter would produce 52% less emissions compared to conventional construction methods. 🌿 From Greenpeace to Green Space: How The Phoenix Will Transform UK Development! 🪵Jonathan Smales, former Managing Director of Greenpeace, is at the helm of the UK's largest timber neighbourhood, "The Phoenix." This East Sussex development aims to revolutionise the construction industry by emphasising demountable cross-laminated timber and bio-based materials like hemp, setting a new standard for net-zero housing. 🔎 Key Highlights: 1️⃣ Sustainable Vision: With a clear focus on sustainability, The Phoenix Project leverages timber and bio-based materials to minimise embodied carbon in housing, reflecting a commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. 2️⃣ Comprehensive Approach: Beyond sustainable materials, the project incorporates a holistic view of urban development, including site material reuse, micro-grids, and a raw housing offer, providing a blueprint for future sustainable communities. 3️⃣ Approval and Ambition: Following the South Downs National Park’s planning committee's approval, the project sets the stage for a transformative urban space that combines residential, commercial, and community-focused facilities, all underpinned by sustainable principles. 🤔 #questionforgroup: How can The Phoenix Project's approach to sustainable development inspire other large-scale projects worldwide? What lessons can be drawn from its focus on materials, community design, and environmental impact? ♻️ As The Phoenix Project rises from the planning stages, it represents a significant leap forward in sustainable urban planning, challenging conventional development models and showcasing the potential of timber and bio-based materials in creating vibrant, eco-friendly communities. 🔗 Learn more about The Phoenix Project and its visionary approach to building the future of sustainable living: https://lnkd.in/gdBzeN8m #sustainability #urbandevelopment #hemp #crosslaminatedtimber #masstimber #masstimberconstruction #netzero #netzero2050 #timber #timberengineering #sustainability #greenbuildings #urbandevelopment #uk #construction #architecture #architecturedesign #engineeringjobs

Around the world, efforts have been made to make the built environment more eco-friendly, but the real estate sector still generates around 40% of the world's carbon emissions. It's time to change that. By embracing sustainable design, architects can reduce the carbon footprints of their projects, reduce energy costs for homeowners, and create housing that remains fit for purpose even as the climate changes. These homes in Australia are a great example of the different ways we can embrace sustainability. Perhaps we could see similar approaches in Ireland in the near future. #SustainableHousing #RealEstate #SustainableDesign #CarbonEmissions

At 011h, we are pleased to announce that our Terra Green Living Z project in #Málaga will be part of the 11 European projects selected for More Life to Level(s), a project funded by the European Union aimed at gaining a rigorous, harmonized, and thorough understanding of how Level(s) is applied in different building typologies across #Europe. The objective of More LIFE 2 Level(s) is to learn from the experience of testing a life-cycle approach to sustainability in real-life conditions (case studies) for at least 10 European buildings, by applying the Level(s) Framework. The information, data, and learnings extracted from the application of the Level(s) indicators in the 11 European case studies will help provide best practice cases and hopefully accelerate the use of Level(s) for further projects in the real estate field worldwide. 💻👉 https://lnkd.in/dbRJX_eC #sustainableconstruction #reducecarbonfootprint

Assembly is using alternative energy sources to lower carbon consumption and operational costs. We are using Geothermal heating and cooling on our projects at 60 Bowden St. for WoodGreen Community Services, 215 Wellesley St E. for Elizabeth Fry Toronto and 2217 Kingston Rd. for Thunder Woman Healing Lodge Society. Geothermal heat pumps are a sustainable and cost-effective solution for thermal control. These systems use the earth's constant temperature, deep below the surface, as an exchange mechanisms for heating and cooling. Using geothermal energy eliminates the need for gas-powered heating and cooling significantly reducing the carbon consumption and operating costs of buildings.
🌎 Alternative energy sources help drive sustainability in the development industry. UrbanToronto is celebrating Earth Month throughout April with features that examine the issues and challenges of #sustainability in the #development industry. Thank you to our sponsors, Assembly Corp. & Wyse Meter Solutions Inc., for helping us highlight sustainability throughout the month. #planning #design #architecture #housing #realestate
