Imagine a world where every building welcomes and supports the unique ways our brains work. This Neurodiversity Celebration Week, Buro Happold are excited to launch our new service offering: Neuro-Inclusive Environments. Approximately 15-20% of the UK population experiences some degree of sensory processing differences, leading to daily challenges and negative impacts from buildings and urban spaces that fail to accommodate their needs. Everyone’s brain works differently, yet this diversity in the human mind is often overlooked in our built environment. As a result, many building users may feel excluded, struggle to participate, or have their productivity significantly impacted. By embedding science-led neurodiversity design principles, we can help create more neuro-friendly environments benefit everyone. Embedding these principles can improve staff attraction and retention, increase productivity, provoke innovative thinking, reduce absenteeism and enhance wellbeing. Join us in celebrating Neurodiversity Celebration Week as we work together to create inclusive, equity-led environments that allow everyone to flourish. Rotterdam warmed the house of their new premises together with a growing team as well as clients, architects and close collaborators. The new space is a hub for collaboration and creativity, with open plan desks, meeting rooms, a modern kitchen and the piece de resistance – the agora – a circular space at the heart of the office where all Rotterdammers meet, greet and eat together and build a strong multidisciplinary team. Dirk Rinze Visser, Partner at Buro Happold, said: “Our Rotterdam team is growing fast. Starting with just 6 desks five years ago, we've expanded to a vibrant team of 40 engineers, designers and support staff. With plans for further growth, it was time for a new office that reflects our Buro Happold spirit: modern, full of daylight and featuring a bold green agora at its heart. This new space is designed to accommodate all our colleagues comfortably and foster collaboration.” The new premises can be found at Stationsplein 45, in 3013 AK Rotterdam. We are excited to share "Inclusive Lighting and the Transformative Power of Light," a research report authored by Buro Happold’s Lighting Lead Europe Paula Longato. This comprehensive study investigates the transformative potential of inclusive lighting in cultural environments such as museums, exhibitions and galleries. The report details a two-and-a-half-year effort to understand how lighting can create more accessible environments, particularly for visually impaired individuals and potentially those with various neurocognitive profiles. Extensive desk research and practical testing in a real museum environment, in partnership with the Institute for Design Strategies at the OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts; the DASA Arbeitswelt Ausstellung, Germany’s largest workplace exhibition with approximately 14,000m² temporary exhibition space in Dortmund; Zumtobel Lighting, Sentistic and SOUR have been conducted to validate this thesis. The research project employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with visitors to the DASA exhibition “Respekt" and quantitative analysis of lighting conditions in two distinct lighting settings. This comprehensive methodology allowed for a thorough examination of the impact of an inclusive approach to lighting on public spaces. The report explores these innovative approaches to lighting design that prioritise inclusivity and accessibility for all visitors and looks at future directions for research and development in the field of lighting and inclusion. A significant finding from the study was that balanced contrast, rather than higher contrast, is more effective in aiding navigation and reducing visual fatigue for visitors, especially those with visual impairments. By lowering both illuminance and luminance levels, the researchers created a more harmonious environment that still contributed to the overall lighting of the exhibition. Visit our website to read the full report to discover more about the innovative approaches and research findings. https://buro.im/3DIQi1V Thanks to all collaborators and contributors to this important study: Isabelle Blase Nils Voerste @Dr Bernd Holtwick (DASA), Ulrich Nether (TH-OWL), Kristina Herrmann (TH-OWL), Tobias Hendrik Jonk (Zumtobel), Nicole Drong (Zumtobel) and Justin Groot (Sentistic) #burohappold #lighting #lightingdesign #inclusivity #inclusive #accessibility #museums #cultural #research

Buro Happold supported J.P. Morgan Asset Management to transform 20 Rathbone Place into office spaces that meet the demands of 21st century working. The redevelopment of the six-storey, 40,000ft² office building in Fitzrovia involves an extension of the existing core, new lifts, the creation of a new 5,000ft² roof terrace and a Category-A refurbishment of a portion of the internal floors. Our team brought significant value, both in verifying the structural capacity of the existing fabric, as well as advising on structural interventions and additions where necessary. Our MEP experts enabled the relocation of the existing rooftop plant in such a way to avoid the need to empty the building of its existing tenants during the works. We worked closely with architect MoreySmith and the wider design team to enable this transformational refurbishment.

EDGE Suedkreuz was developed in the immediate vicinity of Berlin's Südkreuz station. It is one of Germany's largest building complexes using modular timber hybrid construction, comprises two office buildings, each with six floors, and serves as German HQ for energy supplier Vattenfall. From the beginning, the project focus was sustainability – in line with the energy company's strategy and the goals of EDGE Technologies. The aim was to reduce the carbon footprint, use sustainable and healthy materials, and promote the well-being of future users. The modular timber hybrid construction plays a central role and was integrated into the engineering concept. Buro Happold developed a comprehensive concept with an interdisciplinary team, combining structural engineering, technical building equipment, BIM management, and sustainability consulting. All materials were tested for their environmental compatibility. The timber came from certified forests, recycled or recyclable materials were used where possible as well as paints free from toxic substances (VOC free). These measures promote a healthy indoor climate. The entire life cycle of the buildings, including future deconstruction, was considered. A lifespan of 50 years was factored in for all used materials and thanks to the modular wood-hybrid construction, deconstruction can be carried out as easily and efficiently as construction. In our Futureproof event series, we discuss further innovative approaches for resilient solutions in regions, cities, neighbourhoods and buildings. On April 3, we will focus on climate-neutral buildings and their importance for future-proof cities. Are you clear on the critical role ESG plays in building resilient businesses? Jane Madden, Global ESG lead partner at Buro Happold, can explain exactly how. Her recent attendance at GreenBiz (a sustainability event from Trellis Group) was an opportunity to be surrounded by sustainable business leaders and consider some key trends for 2025 and beyond. Top of the list is that ESG remains a key business strategy – and that it all comes back to risk. “The key headline for me from GreenBiz was that ESG is not going away – and nor should it. ESG remains as a proven and effective business strategy. For some, there may be uncertainty around the wider picture, but those of us attending GreenBiz were clear that it remains smart business sense.” – Jane P. Madden, global ESG lead partner. Here, Jane reflects on some of the key discussions, messages and trends that came out of the conference – and what they mean for harnessing ESG to support business performance in a complex landscape: https://buro.im/4iEduNA #BuroHappold #Engineering #Consultancy #Advisory #BuiltEnvironment #Construction #Sustainability #Governance #ESGLeadership #ESG #Resilience

Business transformation. New areas for growth. Improved performance. Enhanced brand reputation. In a complex business landscape, leaders should look to #ESG to provide positive outcomes – from risk mitigation to new opportunities for success. But how did we get here? How can success be achieved? And what is next? Hear from Jane P. Madden, global ESG lead partner at Buro Happold, about her career trajectory, and how she moved from sustainable development work with organisations like the World Bank to supporting businesses in the built environment to achieve success. Jane said, “Good ESG work doesn’t mean providers coming into a company and dictating what is ‘good’ and ‘bad’. It is about identifying a business case and demonstrating risks the company faces if they don’t change and the opportunities available if they do. It’s a fundamental business equation.” Read more from Jane here: https://buro.im/3XsDdQQ #BuroHappold #Engineering #Consultancy #Advisory #BuiltEnvironment #Construction #Sustainability #Governance #ESGLeadership
