Going out of bounds in B.C.’s forests “The logging industry gets away with a lot, and the province doesn’t step in to monitor what they’re doing.” That’s what Tobyn Neame, a forest campaigner for the Wilderness Committee, a conservation organization, told B.C. biodiversity reporter Ainslie Cruickshank. It was in response to something Ainslie uncovered after months of digging: in February, she stumbled across a few mentions of unauthorized logging on a provincial database: in the span of about three-and-a-half years, logging companies allegedly had either cut, damaged, or destroyed forests 173 times outside areas they had permission to log in. Canfor was named in 22 of those instances. In one November incident, a logging operator cut 342 spruce trees and 38 pine trees out of bounds. Canfor told Ainslie such incidents are “uncommon, typically with very low impact,” and the company reports them to the province. “Getting any information on these incidents from the province was a long and frustrating process,” Ainslie told me. “I asked how much area has been improperly logged and government spokespersons told me to file a freedom of information request. The fee on my request? A whopping $1,170.” (She’s still waiting for an answer on the total area of forests lost to such incidents — and to see if the province will waive her fee.) The province doesn’t make public its fines for forestry companies for unauthorized logging, even though it does when companies in other industries violate environmental laws. Officials wouldn’t even tell Ainslie what actions the government took against Canfor and other companies it alleged were not compliant with authorized logging boundaries—that information isn’t public either. For Ainslie, the lack of transparency raises even more questions: Why did these incidents occur? Is there a systemic challenge logging operators are dealing with? Do you think anything can be done to avoid this? https://bityl.co/RzLb

I Help New Inventors Create Strategies to Develop, Protect & Market Their Product Ideas: Attorney I Speaker I Author
There is a story of countless starfish being washed up on the beach. A little girl walked along the beach, picking up starfish and throwing them back into the water. An older man saw this girl, approached her, and asked her what she was doing. The girl said she was throwing the starfish back in the water because they would die if they remained on the beach. The man responded that so many starfish were on the beach, and she could only throw back a minuscule number of them. He then said this number is so tiny; what difference would it make? After hearing his question, the girl picked up a starfish and threw it back into the water. Then she told the man, “I made a difference for that one.” The little girl's actions, though seemingly small, had a ripple effect. When we all use our unique skills, talents, and abilities to make a difference, society as a whole is the beneficiary. Each action, no matter how small, can create a wave of change that reaches far beyond our immediate surroundings. Charles Drew's story is a shining example of how one person's abilities can revolutionize an entire field. His invention of the blood storage system has saved countless lives and continues to do so. Let his story inspire us to use our own abilities for the betterment of society. #MakeADifference #RippleEffect #ActsOfKindness #SmallActionsBigImpact #Inspiration #ChangeMakers #UseYourSkills #PositiveImpact #CharlesDrew #SavingLives #BetterTogether #Empowerment #EveryActionCounts #CommunityImpact #InspiringChange https://lnkd.in/gmM95Dsx

If you've been following Harry Waters, you'll know that his daughter, Ali, is on a mission to collect 1 Million pieces of litter. You'll also know that her campaign has passed the half way point! Go Ali! Go pickers of the world! My current work and play destination brought me to an idyllic beach. Wondering what to do with myself on my work breaks, and spotting a few bits of plastic slowly disintegrating into fish and bird edible chunks, I thought it was time to give Ali a hand. Litter picking is an enjoyable brain break. It's an excuse to get up, stretch your legs and have a wander. It also makes you feel good about making the world a better place for humans and animals. I'm ashamed to say that my contribution to Ali's challenge is only this pick and another bagful back in Scotland... and a few forgotten crisp and sweetie wrappers on hikes. But it's never too late too start. And it feels great to get involved. I'm determined to do more. It's also brilliant as part of a class project. More info at: https://lnkd.in/e98_vseP or follow Harry Waters. Other ways to get involved: Spread the word, share your picks and this opportunity far and wide. Get others in on the action. Share your litter pick and break time experiences in the comments. #1MillionLitterPick #KidsAgainstPlastic

🌍The Black Grouse Translocation Project: Our Misson We’re excited to share our groundbreaking effort to combat the decline of black grouse populations. Our project’s first phase focuses on understanding brood foraging habitats in the North Pennines. With this knowledge, the second phase aims to translocate and re-establish black grouse in the North York Moors—expanding their range to suitable areas and giving them a better chance to thrive. Using radio transmitters and GPS tags, we are tracking their movements, settlement patterns, and survival to guide moorland management and protect the species from future climate impacts. With support from Natural England’s Species Recovery Programme, we’ve already seen positive results—seven females tagged this spring, five nests, and three successfully hatched broods. However, as funding is coming to an end, we need your help to continue this vital work. Watch the video to learn more about how you can support our efforts to secure the future of the black grouse. Find out more about the project and show your support:https://lnkd.in/ennSVnKy #Conservation #BlackGrouse #WildlifeProtection #MoorlandManagement #SpeciesRecovery #ClimateAction #GWCT
