🌟 Just back from The MedTech Forum, Europe’s largest health and medical technology conference. I had the pleasure of moderating a panel on "Digital Healthcare Transformation: Breaking Barriers, Shifting Mindsets." We delved into the critical transition to digital healthcare, discussing necessary changes in incentives and mindsets to enhance patient care. Industry leaders shared their insights, helping us analyze existing obstacles and past failures, and presenting practical solutions. We also explored how recent legislation can revolutionize healthcare through digitalization, fostering innovation, streamlining processes, and improving patient satisfaction. BâleDat: Establishment of a Data-Driven Healthcare Economy in Switzerland! I. The Situation Research is increasingly taking place where there is access to health data. Currently, Switzerland does not meet these requirements in many respects. This leads to an erosion of the attractiveness of Switzerland as a life science location II. The Need: Health Data Ecosystems 1. National regulatory framework for the promotion and use of health data 2. Substantial investment in the development and use of data ecosystems with the creation of incentives III. The National DigiSanté Program The recently launched national initiative will support digital transformation in the healthcare sector over the next 10 years (CHF 392 million/50 projects /10-year term) IV. The Need for Bottom-up Approaches! In parallel and in complement to the national initiative we need agile bottom-up initiatives to accelerate the transformation V. “BâleDat” as Accelerator 1. Establishment of an NPO to promote F.A.I.R. data generation for data-driven healthcare 2. Funding of resources to promote corresponding use cases 3. Identification of use cases; financial, methodological, organizational support in a structured setup 4. Bottom-up support of national programs for digital transformation in healthcare 5. As the orchestrator, the Handelskammer Beider Basel has set up an interdisciplinary consortium to co-create baldat VI. First Use Case A first use case or minimal viable ecosystem focusing on cancer registry data collection will be deployed at the University Hospital Basel VII. Take Home Messages 1. There are hardly any possibilities for the research industry to promote and deploy operational use cases of health data generation 2. Governmental top-down initiatives will create the necessary conditions, but are (too?) late 3. Short-term, economically driven bottom-up initiatives are needed to promote R&I data generation for use in R&D 4. The BâleDat initiative has developed the prerequisites for the establishment of an NPO to promote a data-based health economy through co-creation with partners Switzerland on stage in Berlin!
