Fine Wines | Wine Business - During the last full week of 2023, Bordeaux further lost momentum, ending the seven days to the 28th of December with 29.2% of total trade. Burgundy shot up and overtook Bordeaux as the most traded region by value, narrowly claiming the title with 31.7% of trade.   Despite recording a strong week and accounting for 9.8% of total trade by value, Tuscany’s trade share considerably dipped week-on-week. Tuscany’s share this week remained far ahead of its November share, however. Are wine trade fairs still worth the hype? I left Düsseldorf & Prowein last week with mixed feelings. My pros: + it’s a good opportunity to meet my customers. + it’s a great way to connect & catch up with people from the wine industry worldwide +be updated on the Latest trends: guess what, almost an entirely hall was devoted to zero alcohol wines & spirits ! My cons: -Expensive accommodation -Huge lines outside the show waiting for a cab or an Uber -strikes and canceled flights (second year in a row), with a lot of people trying to figure out how to get home… - How come that the 3 main wine trade shows in Europe are only few weeks apart (Wine Paris, Prowein and Vinitaly) ?! This goes at the cost of the wine industry and of wine makers in particular. Are they still the right place to make new customers? I doubt it and I think that there’s need for a change and for news ideas for the wine industry. Have you been to any trade show lately? Fine Wines - Bordeaux led trade this week accounting for 41.1% of the regional trade share by value. This was an increase on the previous week when it made up 37.2%. Burgundy experienced the most significant increase week on week, rising to 24.6% from 13.1% last week. Similarly, Champagne (11.1%) made gains compared to the previous week. These rises were at the expense of Tuscany, Piedmont and the USA which all saw their weekly trade fall below their January averages. Fine Wines | Secondary Market - Bordeaux dominated the secondary market, accounting for almost 50% of total trade by value.   Bordeaux further asserted its dominance on the secondary market, its trade share rising from 40.2% to 48.2%. Burgundy came in second with 18.8% of weekly trade by value, followed by Champagne which reclaimed third place after a difficult week last week. The region’s share of trade almost doubled from 6.3% to 12.5% this week.
