Ash Mattys sees her job as more than teaching language arts. She’s there to ensure her students feel seen. “What I needed when I was their age was for someone to tell me that it was going to be okay,” shared Mattys. “I want them to know that I see their uniqueness and remind them that they are resilient. Vice President Marketing - Pearson International Higher Education / Marketing Enthusiast / Brand Builder / People Champion / Mum of 2
I've often been described as "determined." In fact, this word has appeared in nearly every performance review I've received—and even in my husband's wedding speech! Recently, I've been reflecting on what sparked this (clearly) dominant personality trait. A standout moment was during my Year 8 parents' evening when my Science teacher asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. At the time, I hadn't given it much thought, so I offered a generic and slightly uninspiring answer. His response was simple but impactful: "Aim higher… you might just get there." Science didn’t turn out to be my strong point, but that sentiment has stayed with me ever since. This is why I'm so passionate about the Pearson English Language Teacher Awards launching today. It’s not just a great marketing initiative (credit to the amazing Thomas Gardner Sophie Quarterman) but also a chance to recognize and celebrate the incredible role teachers play in shaping lives. It’s true what they say—a great teacher makes all the difference! Nominate your teacher, a peer, or an inspiring ELL educator you know today: https://lnkd.in/eH2tXTkQ And if you don’t work in the English Language Learning world, I’d love to hear your stories on how great teachers have inspired you! #Education #TeachingHeroes #LanguageLearning #PearsonEnglishTeacherAward #PearsonLanguages

Mission: Creating award-winning, well-written and globally recognised stories across TV, Film and Literature | UK Global Scholarship recipient @ Warrior Retreats: the No.1 rites-of-passage and leadership retreat on 🌎
"In this classroom, you can have whatever opinion you want, but you have to defend why you think that." It was one of the first things my English lecturer, Dan Varndell, said to our class. I loved that because it fostered a sense of community and encouraged open dialogue. It created an environment where everyone felt empowered to speak their truth. Of course, there were times when people said things that triggered me, but those moments gave me the chance to speak my mind. At first, it feels uneasy - you get the tightened throat, the shiver in the hands, especially when you’ve been in environments where you’ve been silenced, hushed, and pressured to give in to the power dynamics at hand. But there’s something liberating, something empowering, a small whisper that comes about, after you’ve spoken your truth, that tells you that there is no going back. Because when we hold back and don’t express what’s on our hearts, it breeds misunderstanding and division. That's why it's crucial, now more than ever, to revive public spaces—both physical and intellectual—where we can share our opinions without fear of being silenced or "cancelled." In education, especially in English classes, it’s vital that we allow students to express how they feel. Teachers have the responsibility to cultivate an environment where students can explore ideas freely, without the fear of being judged or made to feel inadequate for holding a different perspective. Creating such spaces is essential for building a more understanding and cohesive society. Let's encourage conversations, not silence them.

As language educators, we don't just teach words; we give our students the tools to connect across cultures and borders. Language education is more than a skill—it's the foundation for global understanding. 🌍 To keep up with the changing world, it's crucial to invest in professional development. This allows us to continuously improve our teaching methods and better prepare our students for the global stage. Professional growth is the pathway to creating more impactful educators and, in turn, more empowered students. 💡 When we invest in our development, we ensure that we are touching the future, just as McAuliffe so eloquently stated. #Eaquals #LanguageLearning #TeacherInspiration #ProfessionalDevelopment #GlobalEducation #ContinuousLearning
