If your organization is led through power and control, it is a sign of an organization in trouble. It is a sign of insecure and destructive leadership. True leaders create a culture where all employees are valued and are given the freedom to speak the truth, to express their opinions even when they are different, without fear or retribution. In the Herndon Police Department, we have spent years working on our culture, how we treat, respect, and communicate with each other, at all levels of the organization. Although we continue to be a work in progress, our hard work has paid off, as we are not only fully staffed, but slightly over our authorized strength. No job fairs, no special recruiting events, no signing bonuses, no sacrificing standards to get here. Just be patient and build a solid organization by selecting the right people who share your leadership values and let them shine. They will sell the organization for you. John Maxwell Good Leaders Ask Great Questions I used to go to job fairs with another manager and I would make her so mad when people would come up to us and say "What do you do?" and I'd answer "We're managers, we don't do anything, we watch people do things." First, yes it was a jerkish answer. And totally unhelpful for the people asking the question. It also missed the point. That's what managers do, but as leaders we have a different role. I wish I had said "We're leaders. We're here to help you do this job and help prepare you for what you want to do next." That would certainly get my attention as a place I'd like to work. Background I have shelves of management and leadership books - most of which I’ve read. But all too often I look at a book and realize I’ve ignored or forgotten its lessons. I’ve tried highlighting, flagging with Post-It notes, writing little summaries - they have all helped but not enough. So I decided this year to again post a quote a day here. Basically I’m using my LinkedIn community to hold me accountable, so thanks all. The quotes won’t necessarily be the most powerful or my favorite, just one that jumped out at me when reviewing that book. John Maxwell Team
