Our interns have really stepped up to the plate this summer. So where better for a social get-together than a Mississippi Braves game? We’re excited to have these young professionals on the C Spire team.

Sunday afternoon at the 2024 ICMA (International City/County Management Association) Annual Conference, I attended an education session entitled, "Building the Bench: Strategies for Recruiting and Retaining Emerging Leaders for Large and Small Communities". The staffing, management, and leadership issues we face in Whitfield County are the same plaguing local governments across the United States. First, our workforce is older than those working in other employment sectors. Second, our most tenured employees are retiring and taking talent and institutional knowledge with them as they exit. Third, government employment is not as attractive as it used to be due to stagnant wages, declining benefits, and increasing stress. All of this makes it difficult and vital to fill our ranks replacing those retiring or leaving for greener pastures in the private sector. One solution is that used by baseball teams - developing talent through a farm system. For government that means creating a strong internship program designed to bring young, talented, altruistic people into our organizations and hopefully convince them to remain public servants throughout their careers.

I'll be honest, I don't know if this is typical or not - my gut says no - but this is clearly a company that truly believes each of those people is part of the San Francisco 49ers team. They don't play on the field, but this shows these individuals that you believe their work helped the team accomplish its goals. And while I could be wrong, something tells me they do more things like this that we don't hear about. #teamwork #leadership #teamdevelopment #culture
The San Francisco 49ers are using five planes to fly out 800+ full-time staff, interns, family and friends to Super Bowl LVIII today.

This is a great example of inclusive organizational #leadership! While it’s not always possible to fly every FTE to every event, I applaud the 49ers for setting an example here — especially in the era of hyper-segmentation and favoritism amongst teams. Finding a way to acknowledge the contribution of all employees, whenever possible, goes a long way toward reducing silos, decreasing intra-office resentment, creating healthy workplace culture, and motivating folks to do their best work. #Superbowl #inclusion #culture #belonging

Great transformation
Jeanette Smith came to HIM's Birmingham office reeling from time spent on the streets stemming from drug and alcohol addiction. She admittedly lacked hope and purpose, and thought that her life would be that way forever. When she saw a HIM flyer in the mail, however, something changed. She wanted to do something better for herself and improve her situation. She entered HIM Class 2023-5 full of excitement at the thought of changing her life, and was continually radiating joy throughout her time in class with an eagerness to learn and grow. She was then placed on an internship with Community on the Rise, where she was eventually offered a position on staff! In the video below, hear from Jeanette about her job and from Community on the Rise Executive Director Avery Rhodes about why HIM graduates make great employees.

Looking ahead, Downtown Raleigh’s vision for the future must be grounded in our partnerships and relationships we build with one another 🤝 Our new Economic Development Strategy outlines opportunities to grow partnerships and create fresh strategies to bridge missing or underused connections in the community. How? 📌 Work with local partners to bring even more life science companies to downtown, further bolstering this industry and local innovation (ex. Linking NCSU’s Centennial Campus and downtown as complementary innovation centers) 📌 Develop a specialized ecosystem for Minority-and Women-Owned Businesses that provides more financial support, more space for testing/pop-ups, and more internship opportunities 📌 Broaden the overall business brand and appeal of Downtown Raleigh as a home to the highest concentration of creative and design-based firms in Wake County/the Triangle Learn more about the Economic Development Strategy 👇 https://bit.ly/3MVU0WX
