Host of Tasting Terroir Podcast & Manager @ Global Food & Farm Community | Regenerative Agriculture, Policy
I can’t like this post enough- it’s so true! If you are a food company and you are talking about expanding regenerative, you’d better have a farmer like this one in your supply chain or you should really stop talking about it. That’s not just because of basic fairness, it’s because we live in the age of radical transparency, and as more and more real regenerative farmers bring actual proof of their benefits forward the comparison to big brands that have sold consumers on this idea, but done nothing about it will become glaringly obvious. From a practical standpoint, it’s really not a good move for the brand — so either actually source it or stop talking about it.
The Bread Factory has teamed up with #regenerative farming specialist Wildfarmed to launch a range of #breads for the #foodservice industry. The range, which includes #sourdough loaves and burger #buns, is crafted with a blend of Wildfarmed regeneratively farmed #wheat and other #flours such as spelt, barley, dark rye, and emmer. #britishbaker #foodmanufacture #sustainability George Lamb Edd Lees Anomarel Ogen

Following a five-month closure, Planted Detroit reopens for business — minus its 100% vertical integration model — with new partners on board. The relaunch for the vertical farming company features new salad bowls, home delivered to consumers' doors. Partners include Lipari Foods, JLM Manufacturing, Cindy's Kitchen, Carmela Foods, INC, La Grasso Brothers Produce, Frog Holler and FULFLLD. In a remarkably transparent announcement of the reopening, Planted Detroit founder and CEO Thomas Adamczyk shares insight into the 20,000-square-foot vertical farm’s struggles, the journey from CEA highlight to unscalable, unprofitable farm and back: He adds that, while the future is not certain for Planted Detroit, he remains certain that the vertical farming industry remains a necessity to the world: “My hope in reflecting on past mistakes is to not drown myself in the negativity and regrets, but remain diligent and continue to find ways to provide these fresh, nutritious, and flavorful products to the world!” Read more of Adamcyzyk's comments, including details of what went wrong and right for Planted Detroit on CEA inSight. #CEA #controlledenvironmentagriculture #verticalfarming #indoorfarming #Detroit https://lnkd.in/g3TaHVmH

This was a fantastic look at how the shape and scale of farming have evolved to empower smallholders and independent farming operations. Vertical farming allows for the diversification of yield strategies, which offers new opportunities and risk management outcomes for those who employ these strategies. I love seeing stories like this where farmers make use of newly available methods and tools! #VerticalFarming #Innovation #IndependentFarmers

Stop factory farming now, it will destroy our planet! *** The rising tide of factory farms: A look at the growing impact on animals, environment, and farmers There has been a 29 percent increase in cattle farms with 5,000 or more cattle since 2012, and a 17 percent increase in the largest chicken farms. The landscape of American agriculture is undergoing a dramatic transformation, as revealed by the latest federal data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Released every five years, the recent report sheds light on the 1.9 million farms and ranches covering over 880 million acres, marking a significant decrease in both the number of operations and the land they encompass since 2017. This shift is attributed to the continued expansion of factory farming, a trend that has sparked renewed calls for policy reform from critics and environmentalists alike. Anne Schechinger, the Midwest director of the Environmental Working Group (EWG), expressed concern over the findings, stating, “The USDA’s new data show that without policy changes, factory farms will continue to get bigger and bigger, wreaking havoc on public health, the environment, and the climate.” The report’s state tallies and other details highlight a worrying increase in the size and number of factory farms, particularly those raising cattle and broiler chickens. The growth of factory farms is evident in the numbers. According to the USDA’s Census of Agriculture data, there has been a 29% increase in cattle farms with 5,000 or more cattle since 2012, and a 17% increase in the largest chicken farms. The report also noted a significant rise in the number of animals produced in these large-scale operations, with 28% more cattle, 24% more hogs, and 24% more chickens produced in the largest facilities in 2022 compared to 2012. This escalation in factory farming has led to a corresponding increase in the number of animals raised, with 1.7 billion animals now being reared on U.S. factory farms annually, a 6% rise since 2017 and a 47% increase from 2002.
