California’s new Southeast Asian Studies Model Curriculum is an amazing step for representation of Cambodian, Hmong, and Vietnamese American communities. For too long, their stories of resilience, culture, and contributions have been overshadowed by narratives of war and trauma. This curriculum changes that. Built by the community, for the community, it centers voices and experiences that have been erased from classrooms for decades. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eGiTxtHf

As an International Education and Development scholar courtesy of Chevening Awards I have observed how indigenous knowledges are often marginalized in international education, perpetuating colonialism & cultural erasure. Let's amplify & respect local epistemologies, promoting diverse perspectives & inclusive learning. Decolonize education, empower indigenous voices! I am seeking collaboration with governments and development partners to advocate for more homegrown approaches to pedagogy. #IndigenousKnowledgesMatter #DecolonizeEducation"

✨ I’m honored to be participating in three panels for the Office of Child Care at this year’s Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Tribal Provider’s Conference, focusing on culturally responsive early learning and education. 🌟 Our discussions highlight the critical importance of recognizing and supporting teachers at all levels of cultural connection. Whether deeply connected, seeking reconnection, or new to Alaska Native culture, every educator plays a vital role in creating respectful and enriching environments for our youngest learners. It’s a privilege to share this space with incredible voices like Piiyuuk Qungurkaq-Shields, Cultural Coordinator at Clare Swan Early Learning Center, and daughter of Dr. Panigkaq Agatha John-Shields, a treasured faculty member in our UAA School of Education. Their work exemplifies how cultural knowledge transforms early learning for Alaska Native students and communities. Check out this powerful video that reinforces the value of culturally responsive education: https://lnkd.in/gDFdvArw. Together, we can honor and uplift Alaska Native voices, traditions, and perspectives in education. 🌍💡 #CulturallyResponsiveTeaching #EarlyLearning #AlaskaNativeEducation #UAAEducation #BIAProvidersConference #SeawolvesTeach #SeawolvesLead

I have always been a supporter of culturally responsive pedagogy and the creation of student-centered learning environments. In the Caribbean, we often associate the use of dialect with poverty and those who are uncultured, when the reality is that dialect is a feature of our culture and very way of life. This International Literacy Day, as we celebrate under the theme 'Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace', I encourage each of us in the field of education to meet our learners where they are at. Let's embrace their traditional dialects through the promotion and implementation of culturally responsive teaching. #internationalliteracyday #literacyforall #literacymatters #literacy

“Schools play a crucial role in the lives of newcomers as they provide them with formal education as well as opportunities to learn about life in the U.S.” As newcomers bring a vast cultural and linguistic diversity to the United States, many newcomer youth face challenges. Today’s blog discusses the roadblocks newcomer youth are facing and the ways schools can meet the needs of these children and their families. In November, we celebrate #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth in the U.S. At Childhood Education International, we are celebrating and honoring the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and contributions of indigenous communities in the U.S. and around the world. 📚 Knowledge and experience are powerful tools in fostering understanding and respect. This month, we encourage educators to seek out more opportunities to uplift and include indigenous peoples' histories, languages, traditions, and contributions in their lessons. 🏫 Schools and other education settings should be inclusive, welcoming environments that respect all cultures and backgrounds. Unfortunately, these settings have often been used to denigrate and deny indigenous cultures, histories, and languages. Let's work together to build educational environments that are inclusive, respectful, sustaining, and holistic. 🌎 All children deserve access to a quality education. Let's learn, grow, and build a better future for all children worldwide. This study explores the implementation of critical moral pedagogy (CMP) within Global Citizenship Education (GCED) in two schools and a community center in Seoul, South Korea. Over the course of a semester, a mixed-method approach was utilized, encompassing qualitative interviews with educators, focus groups with students, participant observations, and quantitative surveys. By analyzing diverse educational settings, the research uncovers common challenges and effective strategies for integrating CMP within GCED. The findings underscore the significance of context-specific GCED curricula and the value of strong researcher-school collaborations in enhancing students' global citizenship awareness, critical thinking skills, and social justice orientation. This study provides valuable insights for educators seeking to inspire transformative actions and advance a more equitable and sustainable world. My first Near East South Asia Council of Overseas Schools conference today and I was blown away, amazed, and so appreciative to Jacinta Williams for opening a dialogue and conversation about being culturally responsive in the Education field. As someone who has struggled with cultural identity growing up, seeing minimal representation, and seen a lack of cultural awareness and responsiveness in many aspects of life, it was truly truly inspiring that this was a topic of discussion at NESA and I really hope to make small but impactful changes starting in the classroom as a culturally responsive educator. It starts with you, as an educator, principal, superintendent, teacher, facilitator, how can you be culturally responsive? - when recruiting teachers - when planning lessons or instructions - when having conversations with young children at morning meetings - are all cultural celebrations given equal importance? - do students see representation of themselves in books in the library? - do we as educators celebrate all parts of a culture or just highlight the struggles of minority people? Thank you to my school International Schools Group (ISG) for giving me this amazing opportunity. #culturallyresponsive #cultural #educators #teachers #dialogue #planning #instruction #coherence #value #representation

A new episode is out. In this one, I talk with Miguel Martínez-Luengas, Ph.D about how colonial legacies influence language education, the importance of bilingualism as a tool for social change, and how teachers navigate and shape their professional identities within these frameworks. The discussion touches on both theoretical perspectives and practical initiatives, in the context of Colombia.

How should students learn about #Asian and #AsianAmerican history? Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (#AAPIs) are the fastest-growing populations in the country. Yet experts say their contributions to American history are largely omitted from the classroom. Some 18 states had no content on Asians in their K-12 history curriculum standards, a national study published in 2022 found. With hate crimes on the rise, more states are turning to classroom lessons to help foster tolerance and understanding. In #Connecticut, where the AAPI population has surged by more than 31% in the past decade, the push to include AAPI history is not just about #education – it’s also about being neighborly. https://lnkd.in/enNw-8AE
