Knowles Teacher Initiative awards leadership grants to Teaching Fellows who are engaged in activities that will positively impact STEM education beyond their own classrooms. Kevin and his colleagues attended the NSTA conference in March and will spend the next few months exploring the NGSS Science and Engineering Practices. Together they will develop shared resources to better engage their students in "doing" science and engineering in each of their courses. What does it look like to support teachers in doing this complex work? Provide teachers funding to attend professional conferences and substitute coverage so they have the time to do this important work. Small financial investments can spark monumental change. #KnowlesLovesTeachers #TeacherAppreciation #TeacherLeadership

In partnership with Corinne Sheehan, we've found balance, driven innovation, and tackled challenges head-on, all while maintaining a shared vision to address educational inequality. Day 12 of 20: Supporting Student Leadership One of the new things I learned when I came into the fellowship was student leadership. I realized that there is no age restriction in terms of social change. It was really clear that children can be groomed to contribute to development and given a chance. Their voices need to be heard. Creating a suitable environment for them to build self-esteem and boost self-confidence became my drive. With many engagement practices implemented, I could see a lot of these primary learners coming if they were shy to answer questions. We would proceed to allow them to reach one another, infusing dialogue and drama during subject and topic deliveries. Ways I have allowed their leadership to find expression. 1. Allowing them to design STEM projects with little or no supervision. They learn invaluable skills such as collaboration, delegation, and pitch communication, allowing their creativity to flow uninterrupted. 2. training them in rabies sensitization and allowing them to play active roles in the rabies campaign in other schools with the help of the War Against Rabies Foundation. 3. Allowing them to ask questions and letting them know that they are either correct or they learned. 4. Having debates with them sometimes and giving them the room to share their opinion. What other ways do you think student leadership can be supported? #TeachForNigeria #TFNImpactStories #TFNLeaders #TFN2022Fellows #TFNSchoolLeaders #TFN2024Graduation #TFN2024GraduationCountdown

Our conversation as part of the Rosie Lee Group unorthodox blend live with Lauren Lotka is now available on our substack. I re-listened to it again yesterday and couldn't help smiling, during the call we laughed with Lauren at AI’s expanding role in meetings, humorously predicting a time when our AI bots share a coffee. She shared her passionate journey towards leadership development, emphasising the need for a balance between ‘soft’ and ‘hard’ skills in effective leadership. Lauren’s reflections reminded us of the human core in professional pursuits, envisioning a future where technological advancements and human insights merge under empathetic and skilled leadership. She highlighted the importance of maintaining human connections within teams. Check it out on the link below #AI #LeadershipDevelopment #ProfessionalGrowth

9th International Action learning Conference - 7-9th April 2025 is to be held in Manchester. The theme for the 2025 International Action Learning Conference is Creating the conditions for developing people and organisations with a focus on two areas in particular: Collective capability – action learning has a tradition of people interacting and working together to achieve ‘something’. Collective capability describes those ‘somethings’ as being delivered through a process of collective agency. Papers are welcomed on action learning and how it supports that focus of collective capability/agency/leadership. Action learning as an agent in leadership development – action learning is used throughout many industries as an agent for development of leaders. Please share papers on how action learning supports or is the key component of leadership development within programmes or as one-off activities. Proposals for papers, workshops or other suggested contributions are invited for submission: Refereed papers – abstracts of 300 words Accounts of practice or workshops – outline of 150 words Please email submission to: ALC2025@manchester.ac.uk by 25 October 2024. Please use this email address for any queries about the conference.
