LETS BREAK THIS SILENCE… WHY IS THE VALUE OF A SLEEPOVER STRIKING A NERVE FOR THE PARENT TO SAY “NOPE?” 🛑 90%+ children are abused by a family member or by a trusted external family member or friend. 🛑 Ages 7-13 years old are the most vulnerable ages that tend to be assaulted. 🛑 an estimated 1/3 of children are assaulted by children. (Children’s Advocacy Center Data) February 24,2023, retired Child Abuse Officer McVee shared in an interview: ➡️ #1 repeated experience was children and older were abused at sleepovers. 🆘 Less than 12% of children under the age of twelve report their abuse. Taking time in speaking to your kids about what’s not okay. Is not always easy, but can empowering for them. Everyone thinks they’re the expert on what ‘could’ happen. But, the people that are the experts, survivors, know the unbelievable happens all the time. People are so concerned with not being ‘taken in’ by that one child that ‘lied’ or is being ‘coerced to lie’ that they’ve let so many perpetrators free to abuse that we now have 42 million survivors of CSA. Whatever risk you may think you’re taking to believe a child disclosing abuse, is nothing compared to the risk they are taking to tell you. Children don’t lie about abuse - perpetrators do. If we ask children to tell, we can’t let them down when they do. Believe, protect, and defend the child. Unfortunately it’s not just parents and communities that need to hear this message but the professionals charged with protecting children also.
