NACADA colleagues, I will be participating in a panel on The New Era of Graduate Advising on Tuesday, May 14th, 2:00PM ET. With Yuan Chen, University of Missouri–St. Louis and Ruby Barnett, University of California-Santa Cruz, we will take a look at where graduate advising has been heading in the last five years and where it may head in the next five. With uneven, reduced, and eliminated institutional support, an uncertain legal environment, and a rapidly evolving academic landscape (putting it mildly), graduate advising needs a opportunity to reset. Our students' expectations have changed. Our students have changed, too! What does it mean for practitioners? Can we solve all the problems in an hour! Probably not, but it will be fun to try. If you are like me, you spend a lot of your time thinking about how to create high impact advising opportunities with minimal resources. You may also spend more time managing expectations and emergencies than engaging in academic advising. Too often, the job becomes about convincing people (administrators, students, faculty) that graduate advising is necessary, rather than advising graduates. This session is only open to NACADA members, but if you cannot make it or just want to chat about graduate advising, reach out to me and we can book a virtual coffee break.

Rising seniors, applying to Ohio State? Note the testing section. "October 5 (SAT) and October 26 (ACT) are your last 2024 test dates if you want your scores to be considered for autumn term early action or spring term (both have a November 1 deadline). If you plan to test on either of those dates, you must request that Ohio State receive scores when you register for the test. You won’t be able to review scores from these dates prior to submitting your application by the November 1 deadline." https://buff.ly/3YFuaxE Need a thinking partner to answer your questions about submitting test scores to colleges (and many other things!)? In the second of this three-part blog series, "Building Cohesion to Support Student Success," California Education Policy Fellowship Program (CA EPFP) fellows Nancy Romano Bailey, MPP, PPS and Laura Lara-Brady, Ph.D. delve into Career and Technical Education (CTE) and its critical role in providing equitable, high-quality education that bridges academic learning with technical and occupational skills. In this blog, they illustrate how CTE programs not only prepare students for immediate employment but also pave pathways to postsecondary education and career advancement. Deadlines sound so final. Due Dates are friendlier, but don't carry the impact. No mater which we refer to, the bottom line is that the Eligibility portion (STEP I) of the Anchor Scholarship application is looming. As a new applicant - documentation is required for review prior to proceeding. As a former applicant - update your personal information (you are not a HS senior any more) and go on to STEP II. Lastly, spread the word!! There is still time!!

It was great to be back in beautiful Athens this weekend as the parent of a new alumna (gasp!) of the University of Georgia - Terry College of Business and a panelist at an undergraduate admissions event. Sharing our collective wisdom on the college application process with parents of prospective students reminded me of what an exciting, yet stressful time this is for high school seniors. Here’s a summary of the advice we shared for others on this path right now: 1. Let your student take ownership of the application process. It teaches them accountability, responsibility and independence - all qualities they will need to successfully navigate the college experience. You should support them, but let them lead. 2. Encourage your student to take full advantage of the knowledge and resources of their high school guidance counselors. From helping them evaluate their chances of acceptance at their top schools to essay writing strategies to scholarship leads, their high schools are interested and invested in their success. Don’t underestimate their value in this process. 3. Get organized. Create a spreadsheet to track deadlines, and keep a bank of recommendation letters and essay templates for ease of completing college applications and applying for scholarships. 4. Be patient with your student. They are likely overwhelmed and anxious about whether they will be accepted into their top schools, how their families will pay for college, and what it will be like to leave the safety and security of their childhood homes. Your patience and reassurance during this time is key to their wellbeing. An amazing future awaits! Good luck and Godspeed!

2moThis looks like a wonderful opportunity for the right young person, and I'm glad student voices will be represented. But the $100 stipend seems quite low. Why not add a zero to that figure, and give the student representative a $1000 college scholarship?
