More support should ordinarily be aimed at the secondary industry for an economy to sustainably grow! Our local configuration seems to direct more support towards the primary industry with mining and agriculture taking the bulk of funding. What is the real cost of gold mining? What happens when environmental impact is framed in terms of economic impact? MAAP Conservación Amazónica - ACCA recently analyzed the environmental and economic impact in three local communities in the Madre Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon, where gold mining has torn apart the rainforest and created a public health crisis for residents. The project was carried out using the Mining Impacts Calculator, a tool created by the Conservation Strategy Fund CSF to quantify the economic impact of environmental damage. This whole hullabaloo has been to make : 1. Galamsey (illegal mining - whether in forests or water bodies) an abormination. ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL and governance does not allow anything illegal since it becomes impossible to bring under control or regulate. 2. Ensure irresponsible mining is brought under control (statistics worrying). How many registered companies now and how many is to come? 3. Ensure reclamation of destroyed lands or water bodies. ●Destroyed lands - reclamate ● Destroyed water bodies - reclamate through allowing fallowing (wash away the evils in the rivers through the rains) or preventing individuals from more mining in such places. What I learnt today about 2023 deforestation in Indonesia from Auriga: 1. Without transparency, the Ministry of Environment revised the deforestation figures released by the Global Forest Watch. (Shocking) 2. Nearly 260 thousand hectares of forest, mostly in Borneo, have been destroyed. An increase from 2022. 3. The biggest culprits in deforestation are pulpwood plantations, logging, oil palm and mining companies.
