Private fleets have been evolving the transportation sector in recent years. In 2023, private fleets transported a record 75% of the outbound freight for the companies that own them, up from 70% the previous year, according to a National Private Truck Council study. This marks a shift from the historically steady 67% market share, driven by efforts to control costs. For-hire carriers handled 16% of outbound freight, while dedicated contract carriers managed 8%. Notably, 84% of private fleet shipments went directly to retail customers. Private fleets have increasingly expanded to enhance supply chain control, with top reasons for maintaining them being improved customer service, cost control, and hedging against external carrier costs. https://lnkd.in/gt7SfFvS

Less Than Truckload - On Demand Transportation Services Less Than Truckload (LTL) shipping is a cost-effective freight solution for businesses that need to transport goods without requiring a full truck. This method consolidates shipments from multiple shippers, enabling them to share the transportation cost while efficiently using available space. Key Benefits of LTL Shipping: 1. Cost Efficiency: LTL shipping is economical because shippers pay only for the portion of the truck space they use. This shared cost approach significantly reduces expenses compared to Full Truckload (FTL) shipping. 2. Flexibility: LTL shipping accommodates various shipment sizes, making it ideal for businesses with fluctuating shipping volumes. It is perfect for small to medium-sized freight that doesn’t fill an entire truck. 3. Reduced Environmental Impact: By consolidating multiple shipments, LTL shipping minimizes the number of trucks on the road, reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Frequent Departures: LTL carriers typically have regular routes and schedules, providing more frequent shipping options and faster delivery times. How LTL Shipping Works: 1. Freight Consolidation: Multiple shippers' goods are combined into one truck. Each shipment is individually packaged and labeled for easy identification and separation. 2. Hub-and-Spoke Model: LTL carriers often use a network of terminals (hubs) to route shipments. Freight is transported to a central hub, sorted, and then delivered to the final destination. 3. Tracking and Visibility: LTL shipping offers robust tracking capabilities, allowing shippers to monitor their cargo's progress in real-time. Considerations: Transit Times: LTL shipments may take longer due to multiple stops and handling at different hubs. Handling: Increased handling can lead to a higher risk of damage, so proper packaging is essential. LTL shipping is an excellent choice for businesses looking for a reliable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly shipping solution.
