Read through our top pics ⬇️ 🏢Warehouse rents are declining across the U.S., with leasing rates flattening or decreasing in markets like Southern California. This trend marks a shift from the high rent prices during the pandemic-induced e-commerce boom. Now, there is far more available space and concessions from warehouse owners, such as delayed start dates and free rent periods (more in the Wall Street Journal). 📦 Amazon has surpassed UPS in U.S. parcel volume, marking a shift in market dynamics. In the meantime, legacy carriers like FedEx and UPS contend with declining volumes and increased competition from emerging players. Despite overall volume growth and resilience in consumer delivery demand, parcel revenue dipped slightly (more in Supply Chain Dive). 🚂CSX, a railroad freight company, unveiled its first hydrogen-powered locomotive. The train is a result of its collaboration with CPKC and aims to promote innovation and environmental sustainability. The locomotive, converted from an existing diesel model using a CPKC-developed kit, marks a significant step towards zero emissions and increased efficiency in freight rail operations (more on Freight Waves). 📉J.B. Hunt, one of the biggest transportation companies in the US, reported a decline in profit and revenue in the first quarter of 2024. This was, in great part, due to softer demand in its domestic intermodal service and decreased trucking volumes amidst a weak U.S. freight market. The company's profit fell to $127.5 million from $197.8 million a year ago, with overall revenue sliding 9% to $2.94 billion (more on the Wall Street Journal). 🚛 Ground parcel delivery costs are expected to increase in the second quarter of 2024 as FedEx and UPS reduce discounts and implement new surcharges, according to the TD Cowen/AFS Freight Index. The rate per package is projected to rise to 29.3% above the index's January 2018 baseline, ending a streak of year-over-year declines due to aggressive shipping discounts (more on Supply Chain Dive).
