Over 25+ years in law firms, I have facilitated strategic planning initiatives, led discussions and worked with firms and outside consultants to broach some of the most challenging issues law firms face. From Succession planning within multigenerational environments to bias and behavioral issues, from strategic financial and talent management to operational and technological initiatives - it is vital to take a holistic approach to strategic planning. Sometimes broaching certain subjects within a law firm is challenging and can confront issues of fairness and personality, as well as issues directly tied to the identities of those within the firm. Utilizing the skills and leadership within the firm is essential, and sometimes it is important to get outside help. Among some of the most thoughtful strategic and succession planning consultants and coaches I have worked with are Judy Hissong (she/her), Cassandra Walker Pye and Ricci Victorio, MCC, CPCC, CSP, among others. Thank you to all those who make us better at what we do, and help forge the next generation of professionals in our communities. #strategicplanning #successionplanning #womensupportingwomen #lawfirms #personalresponsibility

Associates eyeing partnership down the road, take a moment to read this article. While the article on its face discusses important dynamics and priorities driving lateral partner hiring and retention, it indirectly offers valuable info for associates hungry for insights into factors that contribute to becoming a partner and a superstar partner. At elite white shoe firms with long-standing institutional clients, the firms rely less on associates' ability/potential to generate business when making promotion decisions. However, superior client service, a track record of excellent work product/managerial skills, and a host of other factors (some somewhat nebulous) are then even more paramount. On the other hand, associates at the top firms often don't receive training in business development. That can, in some instances, present some challenges for senior associates/counsel/NEP who lateral to a firm that relies far more heavily on sourcing new clients--at least, if the candidates move with the aim of eventually becoming equity partners. Long ago, when I was an associate, a partner told me that the greatest job security as a law firm attorney came from having a portable book of business. To be sure, this piece of advice is subject to caveats, exceptions, and qualifications (including what's discussed above). It is, however, advice to keep in mind, along with an holistic awareness of where you are in your career and where/what you want to be in the future. https://lnkd.in/eHPGvei7

📊 Following our research into the Cognitive Diversity of management consultancies, we release our findings of our research into law firms. 🏆 Hogan Lovells, leading the law firms with a score of +6, exhibits a commitment to cognitive diversity, albeit to a seemingly lesser degree compared to management consultancies. This suggests that while law firms are to some degree cognitively diverse, their approach might be more conservative or moderate. Slaughter and May, CMS, Linklaters and Allen & Overy make up the top 5. 📰 Read our full report: https://lnkd.in/efWpQZ_v #lawfirm #cognitivediversity #highperformingteams #slaughterandmay #CMS #Linklaters #Allenandovery #hoganlovells
