Forty-one years ago, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed this date as National Missing Children’s Day. On this date in 1979, a six year old named Etan Patz disappeared when he was on his way to school. He was never found and sadly was declared legally dead in 2001. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is dedicated to doing what we can in terms of missing children. There are some things you can do to help be prepared in case this event ever occurs. Always have an updated frontal view picture of your children. Also keep a record of height, weight, distinguishing characteristics and any need-to-know medical information. Make sure to update your photographs and information every six months. If you find your child has gone missing, there are several things you can do. First, look thoroughly throughout the location to make sure the child is not hiding. Once it has been determined they are missing, immediately call your local law enforcement. After you have reported your child missing to law enforcement, call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST.
