Encouraging Women to Prioritize Their Health: In the U.S., women make about 80% of healthcare decisions for their families, per the National Institute of Health, but they often neglect their own healthcare needs. That failure to prioritize their own health is taking a toll on their overall health and well-being, with less than half of women meeting the federal physical activity guidelines for aerobic activity, per the CDC, and nearly 6 in 10 women considered overweight or obese. The leading causes of death for U.S. women include heart disease, cancer and stroke, health conditions that may be prevented. The latest data brief from America's Health Rankings® on maternal and infant health shows that ongoing challenges like low birth weight and maternal morbidity are on the rise. As a mother and a professional in health care, I believe it’s vital for stakeholders to come together to address this complex problem, which touches on social drivers of health, access to care, health care costs and other challenges.    One way UnitedHealthcare is helping support the health of women and families is with the Surest health plan. New State of Women’s Health Study by Accenture and Springboard Enterprises Women are 2x more likely to have worse outcomes after a heartattack. Unfortunately, due to factors such as isolation and limited access to services, those in rural areas often face poorer health outcomes compared to the metro areas. Today’s theme is 'Know Your Body.' It's essential to be aware of what is 'normal' for you. Take the time to familiarise yourself with your skin, breast, and bowel health, as well as your overall well-being. Despite the promise of digital health, it’s missing the mark on engaging populations of color, according to a new article about the promise of digital maternal health tools, and a report on how effective they are. While the article is written from the perspective of care delivery, it raises issues that apply equally to member engagement efforts by payers as well. The article, in PatientEngagementIT, highlights findings in a report from the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions. Among its findings? "Cultural tailoring is important for uptake and effectiveness and is likely to continue to be important in light of persistent maternal health inequities."
