On August 7, members of the Commission's Community Engagement and Grants team met with one of our K-12 Student grantees, the Jakara Movement. This collaborative meeting was held to discuss the Jakara Movement's upcoming youth-led statewide conferences, partnerships with schools and other entities, and the makeup of their student advisory group. "The Jakara Movement is a grassroots community-building organization working to empower, educate, and organize working-class Punjabi Sikhs, and other marginalized communities; to advance their health, education, and arts/cultural, economic, social, and political power." Chief Financial Officer - Independent Education Sector, advocate for finance and accounting as a career, lifelong student of innovation and strategy.
Australia has a 50 year history of Governments providing capital grants to non-government schools, but it’s rare in the US. Ohio has just started providing millions of dollars in grants directly to private religious schools for campus expansions to accommodate the influx of students leaving the public system for private schooling. Ohio, like many US states uses a voucher system which provides the funding to the parent and can be used at the school of their choice, private or public. Unsurprisingly parents choose private schools which has caused capacity problems. The same problem exists in Australia where independent schools are so popular, they can’t keep up with demand. Whilst the move has its critics, it definitely sends a message that the Ohio Government sees non-government schools as critical to state’s educational needs and the need to offset public school deficiencies. With the continued shift from public to private, will the next problem be what to do with the empty public schools? #schools #education #independentschools #schoolbuildings #classrooms

leveraging SDG's to sustainably solve climate related problems facing young girls and women in Cameroon, ensuring empowerment and financial inclusion for all
As week two of CEFI’s educational advocacy in Donga Mantung Division comes to a close, we’ve gained invaluable insights into the educational challenges plaguing the region. So far, we’ve engaged with 37% (740) of the 2,000 households we set out to reach, each household comprising an average of 5 people. Yet, Nkambe stands out, as its schools are overwhelmed by the influx of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) seeking education. Among the children we reached, 58% (429) were girls, 39% (288) were boys, and 3% (22) were persons living with disabilities. The barriers to education are distressingly clear: 67% (497) of children cited a lack of school fees, 21% (156) feared physical harm due to ongoing threats from armed groups enforcing school boycotts, 7% (52) struggled with catching up after prolonged absence, and 5% (37) expressed a desire to learn a trade instead of returning to school. Our advocacy efforts continue to shine a spotlight on these challenges, with a commitment to ensuring every child’s right to education is realized.
