Driving initiatives that positively impact and lead to equity and justice for our communities. Fostering meaningful partnerships to build community capacity that creates more stable, self-sustaining neighborhoods.

During the last 10 years at SJF, Kevin has been our partner in disaster relief. He’s not only been our go-to when looking for direction on how to respond to global needs, but he’s also been a thought partner and collaborator as we shifted our disaster response and resilience strategy to one of proactive investment and capacity building. Part of his legacy will be as a co-architect of that strategy and how we now build resilience in places where there is or where there will be a humanitarian need. As with any good partnership, we couldn't have done anything at SJF in that realm without Kevin’s efforts at CRS. We know that we continue to build upon what he has co-designed with us and that we will feel his impact for years to come. Congratulations, Kevin Kostic. I wish you the best in your next endeavor and I hope our paths cross in the future.

Friends, after 20 incredible years at CRS, I am excited to share that I have accepted a new position as Director of Foundation Relations at Johns Hopkins University. My deep gratitude goes to everyone who supported me through the hiring process, especially Ann Koch and Amanda Pizzurro. It will be an honor to work with these and other impressive colleagues at such a prestigious institution.

“I thought it was perfect. This is a gathering. Why do we do it, other than just to have a meeting every year? We do it because we want to be intentional about bringing people together. So, I thought her message about sort of how you ensure that there’s a purpose to your work is so impactful for everyone here.” 🌅 To hear more about our INCREDIBLE 2024 Annual Summit this past Thursday, check out this LA Times article from Matt Szabo: https://lnkd.in/gMQKmPx5

Yesterday, at the Orange County Grantmakers Summit, we were excited to sponsor the event and gather as philanthropists and nonprofit leaders aiming to advance equity in our communities. One of the highlights was having Dr. Manuel Pastor from the USC Equity Research Institute provide and early look at the 2025 Orange County Equity profile and how we can use data to make the argument for not just fairness, but prosperity for all. We also participated in an interactive session with the St. Joseph Fund to learn about their approach to leadership and capacity building that centers healing and restoration for Pacific Islander nonprofit leaders at Southern California Pacific Islander Community Response Team, PACIFIC ISLANDER HEALTH PARTNERSHIP, and Marshallese Youth of Orange County. #OCGSummit2024 #SocialImpact #OCGrantmakersSummit

It was a pleasure to attend the Orange County Grantmakers Annual Summit with our team from Charitable Ventures, where the day opened with a powerful land acknowledgment and drum circle. I had the opportunity to meet new friends and reconnect with old ones, all committed to uplifting communities and shaping the future we want to see. I also learned more about the important work of the Healing Tides Initiative, supported by the St. Joseph Fund. Feeling inspired by the collective vision for positive change! #OCGrantmakers #HealingTides #CharitableVentures #CommunityEmpowerment #SharedVision

“We envisage a society in which mental health problems are an acceptable and in some ways valued part of the human experience.” Mike Slade, Lindsay Oades, & Aaron Jarden, Wellbeing, Recovery and Mental Health Systemic inequities such as racism, classism, and sexism are breeding grounds for harm, violence, and oppression that jeopardize generational wellness, health, and safety. At SJF, we recognize the significance of preventative strategies that fight historic and systemic inequities causing intergenerational poverty and collective trauma. We understand that trauma-informed care is people-centered, offering holistic interventions to mitigate the risks and stressors of an individual’s trauma experience. Through our Community Healing and Resilience focus, we seek community growth and advancement and we work towards a more compassionate world where all of our life experiences are valued. #WorldMentalHealthDay

Teachers do so much more than guide us through textbooks; they shape futures, inspire dreams, and unlock potential. Education isn’t limited to the four walls of a classroom. It happens in every corner of our communities—when a neighbor shares a life lesson, when elders pass down their wisdom, and when individuals come together to learn and grow. At SJF, we believe that education is lifelong and comes in many forms. From birth justice and early intervention programs, to after-school programs and community-led workshops, learning creates the foundation for stronger, more vibrant communities. Today, let’s honor all who teach—in classrooms, in homes, and beyond. Together, we can continue to open doors to brighter futures for all. https://buff.ly/3TMt8MX #WorldTeachersDay #RootedInLove #LifelongLearning #CommunityEducation

We continue to prioritize disaster response and resilience through our grantmaking strategies. The Atlantic Hurricane season, including recent Hurricane Helene, has caused loss of life and significant damage across several states. Our partners are actively responding to meet the urgent needs of affected communities. Catholic Charities USA has mobilized significant resources in Tennessee, North and South Carolina, and Florida by: *Deploying Disaster Case Managers to provide both on-the-ground and virtual support, including technical assistance *Distributing several tractor-trailers and trucks with immediate relief items, including solar lights, disaster visibility kits, and water *Planning the distribution of additional items, including hygiene kits, cleaning kits, baby supplies, and tarps Through its Atlantic Hurricane Season Recovery Fund, Center for Disaster Philanthropy is supporting the Southeastern states by: *Providing resources to community-based organizations for immediate and long-term recovery needs, such as rebuilding efforts, disaster case management, and legal services *Mobilizing those looking to give in a strategic, equitable manner that better prepares communities for future disasters A disaster of this scale has an impact beyond our domestic borders. We have also partnered with Catholic Relief Services to meet challenges in international communities. Anyone wanting to get involved with disaster recovery efforts is encouraged to do so directly through our partners, Catholic Charities, CDP, and CRS. Catholic Charities: https://lnkd.in/gHiKzcY2 CDP: https://lnkd.in/epMiNtDB CRS: https://lnkd.in/gSyAkjEg We are steadfast in supporting communities affected by disasters, ensuring that relief efforts are swift, effective, and sustainable. While disasters affect an entire community, they lay existing inequities bare. We champion resilience and prioritize the needs of marginalized communities so that they are empowered to withstand and recover from devastating disasters. Our work is rooted in love, and together with our trusted partners, communities are more whole, more healed, and more able to flourish, hope, love, and grow.
