Happy Juneteenth! Today, Michigan launches the first cohort of the Michigan Justice40 Accelerator. Although "environmental justice/EJ" is still a new term for many people and "climate justice" is addressing another layer of disparity in the current crisis, EJ work has been happening in communities as long as there have been threats to public health, affordable housing, healthy food supply, clean air and water, and access to land and open space. These communities, organizations, and leaders haven't always been operating under the banner of "environmental justice" and we don't always label the work "climate justice," but the work has been happening and frontline communities have been and continue to resist the pollution and destruction around them. Through efforts funded by federal laws like the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) and state initiatives, such as Michigan's, we can build capacity and support these efforts. I hear many people say there's not enough EJ work happening, and it's true that there's not enough funding for EJ work, but there are people working for cleaner, healthier, and safer communities all around the Midwest. They're growing food in vacant lots; weatherizing homes; treating children with asthma; and standing up for clean water, water rights, affordable housing and public transit, and energy independence. We need to leverage these federal and state funding opportunities to grow these local efforts and deliver direct support to these community leaders. If you are a community leader in the Midwest, or know one, please get connected to the many existing networks and resources, such as EGLE's new program, the EPA Thriving Community Technical Assistance Centers (TC-TACS): Region 7 Heartland Environmental Justice Center, Region 5 Blacks In Green TCTAC, Great Lakes TCTAC, and the Region 8 TCTAC Montana State University-Bozeman.
Join the Office of the Environmental Justice Public Advocate, the Office of Climate and Energy, and Elevate Energy to learn how to apply for the state’s first environmental justice focused grants and how to become part of the first cohort of the Michigan Justice40 Accelerator. The strategic use of environmental hazards as a proactive tool for enhancing community safety is often overlooked in traditional public safety measures. This approach, blending psychology, economics, and security expertise, involves modifying or utilising existing environmental elements to increase the difficulty or risks associated with committing a crime. In Australia, this approach has been implemented in various contexts, such as bushfire management and controlled burns in areas prone to arson. Urban settings are designed to maximise natural surveillance and minimise hidden spots, deterring potential criminal activity. Community involvement is pivotal to this strategy, as it increases awareness and fosters a sense of collective responsibility toward maintaining a safe environment. The collaborative approach requires law enforcement, urban planners, environmental scientists, and community leaders to design functional and secure spaces. Successful environmental hazard strategies have been implemented in several Australian cities, such as Darwin, where redesigning urban parks and alleyways with greater lighting and CCTV has led to a noticeable decrease in incidents of muggings and vandalism. The integration of technology with environmental hazard management presents new opportunities but also raises ethical questions regarding privacy and the extent of surveillance in public spaces. Security personnel advocate for a holistic approach to safety, incorporating environmental factors into their strategies. The City Safe program and public order response units have reduced the expectations of harm and violence in patrolled areas. #security #safety #securitytraining #securitydesign #environmentaldesign #environmentaledeterrence #environmentalhazards #psychology #behaviour #cpted
