Appreciate this is an archived article now but it is still cropping up on my daily news feed. Always be cautious about ‘advice’ that can suggest ‘how’ to achieve a good or better inspection outcome. As I have posted before, an inspector will make their judgements based on the evidence they gather on the day and what additional information Ofsted may already hold about a provider. Although the information contained in Pennie’s article is in line with the current inspection framework, I always remind clients we don’t ‘do’ best practice just for Ofsted. Assessment arrangements need to be accurate, fully understood and carefully implemented each day so that children’s development is precisely planned for. This shouldn’t just be in place to satisfy Ofsted. It is an EYFS requirement and is there for a reason. Children’s learning and development needs are different now…. We are seeing an increasing number of children with gaps in their learning which need precise assessment and accurate planning for. This should be fully embedded so that every child gets the individual support they need to set them on the best path for future learning. Contracts contain notice provisions. I'm a proponent of charting out notice provisions and making sure those that need to know what they are have the charts. Oftentimes, it's the same chart used per contract for the same type of notices, but the notice periods/mechanisms are different. This leads to another issue. Don't gloss over the notice provisions when reviewing/negotiating contracts. They are important and too many times I see notice provisions that are absurd, i.e., unreasonable from a time limit and administration perspective. Regardless, the one thing that should be done, and irrespective of what the contract says from a notice standpoint, use e-mails to send notices and memorialize occurrences. Even if the contract says they have to be in writing and delivered by horse courier to only 1 person, send the e-mail notifications. Doesn't mean you neglect the contractual notice, it means you make sure you have a contemporaneous notice of the occurrence and e-mail is the mechanism everyone conducts business.
