Today is World Hunger Day, a time to reflect on the critical issue of food insecurity affecting millions worldwide, including its significant impact here in the U.S. According to a 2024 report from Feeding America: 🌍 Food insecurity exists in all 3,144 counties and county equivalents as well as all 435 congressional districts in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. 🌎 Child food insecurity rates reach almost 50% in some counties across the U.S. 🌏 The national average cost per meal, which reflects how much money people who are food secure report spending on food, has also reached its highest point in the last two decades. At Sharebite, we're dedicated to being part of the solution, working hand-in-hand with partners like Feeding America and City Harvest. To date, we have donated 9.5 million meals and counting to communities in need across the U.S. While today serves as a significant reminder, our commitment to fighting hunger extends far beyond just one day. Food insecurity affects every community in the U.S. Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study is a powerful tool to understand local impact and take action. We can leverage this data to address factors impacting food insecurity and unite to ensure everyone has access to the food and resources we all need to thrive.  Many of us have experienced hunger or know someone who has.  When we listen to people facing hunger and use the study's findings, America can choose to end hunger. Whether it’s advocating for a strong farm bill or investing in our communities, it’s up to all of us to unite in our efforts to create a future where everyone has access to the nutritious food and resources we need to thrive.     Even when we disagree, we can all agree on ending hunger. “I’m having a hard time making ends meet.” The sandwich generation is real: as rents and cost of living goes up, more people are faced with taking care of their children AND their parents. For a single mom working multiple jobs, there’s just not enough time in the day- or enough money in the bank - to provide nutritious meals for their loved ones. 25% of New Brunswickers live with food insecurity, making difficult decisions every day about which bills to pay and what to go without. Statistically, if you aren’t in the 25% experiencing hunger, you likely have encountered someone facing this struggle. And yet, food waste is a significant problem: 58% of food produced in Canada is not eaten, and 457,138,000 pounds of food could be rescued in Atlantic Canada alone. At Greener Village, we’re going to help New Brunswick families THRIVE by building Atlantic Canada’s first Perishable Food Rescue Centre. The PFRC will rescue, process and distribute food to 70 food banks in New Brunswick, ensuring more people have the resources they need to THRIVE.
