Here are my top takeaways: 1. 🚀 The clean energy boom is coming, but a worker shortage looms. With 5-6 million jobs projected, we need to act now to build a pipeline of skilled talent. Partnerships between government, industry, and training providers will be key. 2. 🌈 Diversity isn't just a feel-good metric - it's a necessity. To fill the gap, we must attract women, people of color, and other underrepresented groups to clean energy careers. That means addressing barriers like transportation, childcare, and a historically exclusionary culture. 3. 🎓 Training must evolve to meet the moment. Employers are hungry for hands-on skills, wrap-around support services, and programs that reflect the latest tech. Agile funding and innovative delivery models can help training providers keep pace. 4. 💼 Quality jobs are the ultimate recruitment tool. Beyond just high wages, clean energy careers must offer benefits, advancement pathways, and a sense of purpose. Employers who invest in their people will win the war for talent. 5. 🤝 This is an all-hands-on-deck effort. No one organization can solve this alone. This is exactly the issue that everyone should be emphasizing when talking about the societal and economic changes necessary to address climate change. "Good green jobs" will not materialize with the clean energy transition just because new tech comes on the scene or renewable energy companies get subsidized. Jobs may materialize, but will they be good? Not unless we make it so. Renewable energy companies should not be able to get away with terrible labor practices and wages just because they're contributing to the clean energy transition. Unless forced to, CEOs will continue to do what makes them the most money, which is to say, keeping the corporate American status quo of low wages, terrible health insurance, little time off and no job security. Creating a clean, sustainable economy means ending one that is built on exploitation and inequality and no longer allowing corporations to act with impunity. Switching to clean energy without switching to a society where folks can equitably work and live with dignity and raise a family doesn't change anything for the average American. And climate industry spheres will remain white collar, abstract spaces viewed as unfriendly to working people. For good reason. 🔍 The Reality Behind Clean Energy in Texas: Why It Matters to All of Us. As we transition to a more resilient clean energy economy, we must ask ourselves: What kind of future are we building if the workers making this possible are sacrificed in the process? Researchers Avalon Hoek Spaans, M.A., Jillian Morley, and Bethany Figueroa from the Climate Jobs Institute at Cornell University ILR School, in collaboration with the Texas Climate Jobs Project and Organized Power In Numbers, have produced a major report based on responses from 1,200 clean energy workers in Texas, and what they found is concerning: ⚠️ 1 in 4 workers have experienced work-related injuries. ⚠️ Almost half of workers have suffered heat-related illnesses. ⚠️ 70% lack access to workers' compensation. ⚠️ 71% lack retirement benefits. ⚠️ 47% are without health insurance. Why should you care? 💚 A fair transition is essential. We have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to ensure that this transition lifts everyone up, not just a select few. Without strong labor standards and protections, the transition to clean energy risks becoming another story of exploitation and inequality. 💚 This is about dignity and fairness. As workers ourselves, we should all be concerned by the conditions revealed in this report. It’s not just about clean energy jobs—it’s about the kind of society we want to live in. 💚 At the end of the day, there is no clean energy transition without workers. “Unless workers see themselves and their interests reflected in these new energy technologies, there’s never going to be the kind of political support that we need to be able to do the things we need to do to save the planet,” Ricky Levy, president of the AFL-CIO in Texas told Emily Pontecorvo of Heatmap News.
