Exciting Times Ahead in Climate Tech! Climate tech is now the biggest sector in European tech investing, covering a 30% of total European tech investment. Globally, climate tech represents more than 10% of venture capital and private equity investment, a significant increase from less than 1% in 2013. With over 25,000 unique climate tech ventures worldwide, the momentum is undeniable, fueled by a shift towards sustainability and renewable energy solutions. However, we are confronted with significant challenges that demand our attention and ingenuity. For instance, despite the urgent need to monitor global emissions, our current capabilities are limited. The data scarcity in the industry underscores the pressing need for enhanced data infrastructure and methodologies. Furthermore, while significant capital flows into climate tech, only 8% of energy transition investments reach emerging markets. Investment barriers, innovation potential, and unmet demand in these regions remain pivotal determinants in harnessing the full potential of green finance and climate tech solutions. Additionally, supporting startups and SMEs in the climate tech space presents another challenge, requiring tailored support and resources to scale their impact and drive meaningful change. Despite these challenges, the opportunities in the climate tech industry are vast and promising. A great report from Revolution on America's emerging climate tech hubs. Highlights that once overwhelmingly dominant, California’s share of climate tech funding has decreased significantly over the last five years as ecosystems across the country build momentum. Good to see Denver & Boulder Colorado ranked at the number two position in both deal value and deal count Revolution believes that America is more competitive when more people in more places are part of the innovation ecosystem. Accordingly, a more dispersed climate tech economy will lead to greater innovation and more ready adoption of climate solutions. 🌐How can we collaborate to help accelerate cleantech innovation? This was the theme at our 2nd session of the Innovation Network of Networks events across the Oxford to Cambridge Pan-Regional Partnership, an initiative being jointly facilitated by Cambridge Cleantech and Oxfordshire Greentech. A big thanks to Cambridge Consultants, who hosted us and provided a fascinating tour, as well as activities and showcases at our Climate Tech Club, held later that day. Bringing together network leaders across #cleantech and other sectors, we identified key challenges and opportunities for better collaboration and knowledge-sharing. Our aim is to help harness the innovation potential of the region and meet the SDGs. Some shared challenges identified include: 🖥️ Skills (and digital skilling for young people) 🏙️ Inequality within cities but also the disparities between towns/cities within the region. How can we make sure the wealth generated from our powerful economies is better distributed and realised by local communities? 💰 Funding. How can we work together to explore funding opportunities? What other funding is out there?
