Cohort 12 is off to a strong start. And possibly the first time I've been quoted back to myself so quickly! "If you feel like the situation is prepared for your innovation, you're too late." At mercury, we learn by doing, with a minimum of orientation or lecture - we jump in and get our hands on collaboration and teaming and use alumni coaches to adjust, give guidance, and monitor performance along the way. Rapid, personalized feedback, and new mental models for how to communicate, navigate bureaucracy, and engage creative 'flow' in teams - these are among the skills that are developed and honed over 13 weeks of deliberate practice.

While asking the right questions is fundamental to the discovery process in fundraising to acquire useful & accurate information, the most important part is to listen. Listening is a commitment of Dixon Center for Military and Veterans Services. In August, we engaged with several organizations in which they all shared and recognized the needs and challenges facing aging veterans, particularly the cost and access to long-term care services. We heard them loud and clear – there is a need for an innovative solution. Serving as a catalyst for change, Dixon Center is in collaboration with relevant community-based partners and funding partners such as United Methodist Communities, Soldier On, Lever for Change, Humana and AARP Foundation to test and develop solutions. During the Next Big Thing panel at NATIONAL TRAINING & SIMULATION ASSOCIATION #TSIS, moderated by Bob Kleinhample, a topic that came up was experimentation with AI. I was reminded of this info paper from the Partnership for Peace Consortium titled “How AI Supports Military Education Training, Exercises, and Evaluation.” It informs some basics on AI and then makes a series of recommendations for military organizations like DoD. One of those is conducting 1-3 pilots with AI in learning. Something that I and FedLearn fully support and embrace. Read the paper. It is worth your time if you want to learn more. 20 years ago this week was my final interview with Congressman Rob Andrews at the Rayburn Building in DC. That interview marked the beginning of what was supposed to be my 12-month appointment to manage the Drexel ACIN Camden Center. At the time the ACIN was a fledgling one-off congressionally funded jobs/military tech dev/academic-industrial research partnership. Over the following 10 years we expanded its research portfolio to exceed $100M in military tech-dev/research/business incubation. A business incubation - technology development success story unto itself. A renowned entrepreneurial academic, a lifelong "no rules" entrepreneur, an amazing computer scientist, and me, the "you can't do that" rules-based Director. Years of testing and teaching each other daily. A perfect example of a diverse team successfully coming together for the benefit of something much bigger than all of us combined. We helped warfighters, we made a difference, we had fun. Ken Blank, Lou Bucelli, Bill Regli, with Beth Manning and Elva Torres trying to keep us focused. Thankfully, 20 years later we maintain contact, we still have great times together, and hopefully we still manage to make a difference. #OrlandoFL— The #USSpaceForce on Dec. 12, kicked off its first #nationalconference focused on professional development, bringing together #servicemembers, known as #guardians, from across the #nascent military branch. The #SpacepowerConference — with about 2,000 people in attendance from the U.S. Space Force, allies, and private industry — was organized by the #SpaceForceAssociation, an advocacy non-profit that promotes the #SpaceForce mission in the public and policy spheres. Since the Space Force’s inception inside the Department of the Air Force in 2019, the service’s professional development gatherings have been part of the larger Air & Space Forces Association conferences. All the military branches host conferences focused on their specific domain. The Space Force is now working to establish itself as a separate service devoted to #spacepower, not just an offshoot of the Air Force. The struggle about who gets to profit and benefit from the UFO technology has just begun. US politicians and other interests have started to position themselves. E.g. Rep. Tim Burchett, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, Rep. Jared Moskowitz, Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Mike Rounds, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator Marco Rubio et al. The value of the UFO tech in the market place is priceless. There are huge business opportunities. I would like to see a broad and open international dialogue about how the whole world could benefit from the tech. Not just some narrow corporate and military interests in the US. Brian Weaver to speak on AI and Warfare at the U.S. Army National Security Roundtable. On March 5th, Brian Weaver, CEO of Torch.AI, will share thoughts with industry and government experts at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) National Security Roundtable (NSRT). The focus topic for the event is “The Current and Future use of AI within the Department of Defense”. As the founder of Torch.AI, a pioneer in autonomous data fusion and AI infrastructure, Weaver brings valuable insights into how AI can be leveraged to improve national defense capabilities, including a firsthand look at how actual operational AI solutions have been applied to drive decision-making, improve national security, and protect our nation’s warfighters. Weaver will be joined by other panelists Scott Cohen (CEO, Jaxon AI),  Peter Im (Director, Information Advantage Scholars Program, CGSC), and COL. Kris Saling (Futures Chief/Acting Director, Innovation Directorate, U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC).
