Application of Boron-11 trifluoride in Electronic Industry: Boron has two naturally occurring stable isotopes 10B at 20% and 11B at 80%. Boron is used in electronics manufacturing as a dopant for silicon to modify its semiconducting properties, and is most commonly supplied as the gases boron trifluoride (BF3) or diborane (B2H6). 11BF3 is produced by the distillation of naturally abundant BF3, and can be converted to other boron compounds like B2H6. Important physical property – neutron capture: The earth is continuously bombarded by high-energy cosmic radiation, which is produced primarily by events distant from our solar system. We are shielded from most of this radiation because it reacts with the molecules in our outer atmosphere. A by-product of this shielding mechanism are neutrons which constantly shower the earth’s surface, but are not strong enough to pose any biological risk, usually passing through most materials without reaction. However, the nucleus of the 10B atom is more than 1 million times likely to react with background neutrons versus other isotopes, including 11B. This results in splitting the 10B atom into a 7 Li (lithium) atom and an alpha particle (helium nucleus). The smallest semiconductor gates now contain fewer than 100 dopant boron atoms. If even one of these is transmuted into a lithium atom, it can change the gate voltage and therefore the function of the transistor. Furthermore, the energetic alpha particle can cause additional damage. By using BF3 which is depleted of 10B below 0.1%, semiconductor manufacturers can greatly reduce the risk for component failure. Initially, IPMs D2 and 11BF3 were used for making chips with the most critical value, like high performance computing processors, or remote operating environments like satellites and space vehicles. Now, as chip dimensions shrink to single nanometers and transistors multiply into the billions, these IPMs are increasingly being adopted into more high volume manufacturing processes.

Researchers at MIT’s Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) and MIT spinout company Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS), published in a collection of six peer-reviewed papers in a special edition of the March issue of IEEE Transactions on Applied Superconductivity. Together, the papers describe the design and fabrication of the magnet and the diagnostic equipment needed to evaluate its performance, as well as the lessons learned from the process. Overall, the team found, the predictions and computer modeling were spot-on, verifying that the magnet’s unique design elements could serve as the foundation for a fusion power plant. What do atomic clocks have to do with "Quantum" and why should I care about them? Read on to find out. For the past 30 years or so, the general standard for precision timekeeping has been Microsemi’s 5071, a cesium based atomic clock with an average sales price (ASP) approaching $100,000. At the upper limits of non-optical atomic clock performance is the hydrogen maser which has ~100x the precision of the 5071 but has an ASP nearing $400,000 and generally requires an isolated environment and needs to be operated and maintained by highly technical personnel. There is a major market opportunity for a company that can provide “maser-like” performance at 5071 or better pricing. See the link below for the latest Quantum Leap write-up of the current state of play in atomic clocks. I expect we will begin seeing many new optical clocks coming to market in the next few years. https://lnkd.in/gAxWCWie Companies referenced: Vescent, Menlo Systems, Infleqtion, Microsemi Corporation, TOPTICA Photonics, OROLIA LIMITED, Excelitas Technologies Corp., Octave Photonics, Muquans (now Exail), Stanford Research Systems Inc., Tekron International, AOSense, Inc, Xairos, AccuBeat, Frequency Electronics, Inc., SpectraDynamics, Inc., Oscilloquartz SA

Fusion power made a huge leap forward. 40 times smaller magnets, at the same field are now possible. Great innovation of insulation-free coils and "high" temperature (20 K) superconductors. [20K is a LOT easier to achieve than 4 K, or anything below 4 K.] " But in predicting the effect of the quench, the model predictions diverged, so it was necessary to get the experimental data to evaluate the models’ validity. “The highest-fidelity models that we had predicted almost exactly how the magnet would warm up, to what degree it would warm up as it started to quench, and where would the resulting damage to the magnet would be,” he says. " That is very impressive. I love the use of the word "diverge" here, a perfect choice. Excellent science. I have a book by Francis Bitter, than is now on my child's bookshelf. :-) 😁 https://lnkd.in/g3VH8Rjz

Helium is a real vital investment opportunity with evolving plays in Canada and Africa.
The recent helium shortages have been detrimental to critical industries like healthcare imaging and semiconductor manufacturing. MIT Technology Review spoke with experts like Phil Kornbluth to learn more about the important gas' scarcity. “At the end of the day, what’s happening is helium’s just getting more expensive,” says Ankesh Siddhantakar, a PhD student in sustainability management at the University of Waterloo in Canada. “The era of cheap helium is probably gone.” Read it here: https://loom.ly/79Qtv1c

The condensed matter physics or the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is the state of matter that is typically formed when a gas of bosons at very low densities is cooled to temperatures very close to absolute zero (−273.15 °C or −459.67 °F or 0 K). Under such conditions, a large fraction of bosons occupy the lowest quantum state, at which microscopic quantum-mechanical phenomena, particularly wavefunction interference, become apparent macroscopically. More generally, condensation refers to the appearance of macroscopic occupation of one or several states: for example, in BCS theory, a superconductor is a condensate of Cooper pairs. As such, condensation can be associated with phase transition, and the macroscopic occupation of the state is the order parameter. etc. Zero-point energy (ZPE) is key for energy production.
