March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month!📅 Together, we can raise awareness about the inclusion of people with developmental disabilities and celebrate the uniqueness and potential of every individual, regardless of their abilities. 💙 🧩What are Developmental Disabilities? "Developmental disabilities (DD) are a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. These conditions begin during the developmental period, may impact day-to-day functioning, and usually last throughout a person’s lifetime. Another similar term you might hear is intellectual disability (ID). Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations in both intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills." March marks Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, sparking some reflections on my end. I've realized many people may not be aware of the importance of People First Language (PFL) – a respectful way to communicate that acknowledges the person before their disability. Living with Type 1 Diabetes, though not an intellectual or developmental disability, has heightened my awareness of the everyday hurdles and misunderstandings that people with disabilities encounter. A significant realization for me has been the impact of our language choices. Small changes in how we talk can make a big difference. It's not about being overly politically correct; it's about respect and understanding. As someone navigating life with a chronic condition, I see the value in being mindful about our language. This month (actually how about EVERY month), let's all do some research on PFL and try to be more aware of the words we use. It's a simple step, but it can contribute to a more inclusive world for everyone. #DevelopmentalDisabilitiesAwareness #Inclusion #Respect #PeopleFirstLanguage

The February 2023 special issue of the International Journal of Developmental Disabilities highlights the transformative potential of Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) in upholding the human rights of individuals with disabilities. PBS, a values-led approach, integrates evidence-based strategies to enhance social inclusion and quality of life. This aligns with the human rights model of disability, which emphasises respect and support for natural human diversity. This issue explores person-centred and rights-based methods in various settings, ensuring that individuals with disabilities experience inclusion and participation. It discusses systemic changes in schools to achieve equitable outcomes for students with disabilities, address ableism, and promote social justice. Empirical studies within this issue demonstrate effective PBS-based services that respect the dignity and rights of disabled people. The discussion papers call for further research into person-centred and rights-based support, encouraging a shift towards practices that honour the autonomy and preferences of individuals. PBS articulates the practical ways in which a society that values each individual’s rights and well-being can pave the way for inclusive practices that celebrate diversity. https://lnkd.in/eBZNb9ex #HumanRights #PositiveBehaviorSupport #Inclusion #DisabilityRights

In honor of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, let's take some time to review the importance of Person First Language. Put the person first in word and thought: Emphasize the person rather than the disability. Remember that most people with a disability want to be thought of as ordinary people. Be accurate and not judgmental: If you're unsure about how to describe a disability, ask someone who knows, such as the person with the disability. Emphasize abilities: For example, say, "uses a wheelchair" instead of "confined to a wheelchair." Remember that language shapes attitude!
