IRL programming for your community can take a lot of work and you may not get the "scale" you get with other types of programming, but there's no better way to create community connections than getting people to interact in meaningful ways through in-person events. No doubt about it, these events are tough to pull off and create value, but when you do it right, it's awesome to see the results. Lisi, Chen, and I talk a little bit about how have a little more intention and patience can help you craft better community experiences.

A message from our Founder and President, Josh Maleeff: Thank you to all of our members for being part of the L&D Philly community. When this group started in 2015, all our meetings were in-person. That was largely true for our first four years. Like many organizations, we pivoted to all virtual programming in 2020. As we approach 2024, we have some exciting news! The time has come to return to our roots and focus on in-person events. Beginning in March, we will host quarterly events. These events will continue our mission of bringing quality programming to L&D practitioners. Additionally, it will restore the opportunity to connect (or reconnect) with the members of our community. I personally have missed this interaction and look forward to sharing a meal and ideas with my peers. As part of this transition, we have realigned the Board of Directors. I remain President/Treasurer, Erin Dischinger is Vice President, and Vickie McDevitt is Secretary. As their time on the board comes to an end, we all want to thank Suzanne Comer, Mike Brenner and Tanya O'Neill for their service to L&D Philly. We will take the next few months to retool the organization for our new path forward. So, we might be a little quiet for the next 2 months (including a suspension of our weekly newsletter), but look for more information in late February. Here's a quick teaser of what to expect. We are targeting the Week of March 18th for a dinner at a location in the suburbs with a panel discussing "Practical Application of AI in L&D". We are actively seeking panelists for this session. Lots coming from St. Albert Impact after the adoption of our 5-year technical plan last year and the adoption today of our year 2 goals. Lots of work to do before September when we aim to move our Tier 1-3 programming to full year and remove the mid-year summer tryout. Hi! 👋🏽😄 My name is Tony, and today I want to talk to you about an amazing film I watched called Butterfly In The Sky, starring LeVar Burton. The impact Reading Rainbow had on my generation brought a tear to my eye. As I watched the film, I felt chills hearing about the struggles educators faced trying to bring free educational content to the masses. Eerily, it parallels what we’re seeing today. Back in the late 80’s and 90’s, congress wanted to shutdown PBS, removing iconic children’s programming like Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow. Today, social media is under similar scrutiny and various platforms are under investigation for negatively impacting young people’s lives. Times may look different, but there are similar forces at play. I walked out of the film with a few pages of notes, ideas, and questions to answer. The only reason I didn’t walk out with more was because writing complete sentences in dark a theater was much harder than I realized ☝🏽😅 In my digital community work, I aim to create spaces that help people learn and grow as PEOPLE, not just customers. Creating opportunities for people to share their unique stories safely. Creating settings where differences are appreciated, celebrated, and valued. Online spaces where users are transformed into neighbors. This film reminded me of how important intentionality, professionalism, and curiosity are to working in public education. It’s all about bringing humanity to digital spaces. If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend it! 🦋🌈📖
