Once considered among the highest end of high-end summer gigs, the position of “Summer Associate” is apparently a dying art at today’s law firms, with recruitment for said position reaching the lowest point in more than a decade. Offers to law student interviewees were down almost 20% from last year alone. What is causing this shift, and what can recruiters in other high-wage industries take away from it?

How to stand out as a junior or summer associate: 1) Keep regular office hours. This may be 9 to 5 or 8:30 to 5:30. Notice when partners are in the office and mirror their schedules. 2) Be prepared. Perfection is not the expectation, but you can minimize mistakes by being prepared. Preparation is key and is expected. 3) Hit your hours. Do your best to capture your time. Do not reduce your own hours because something took longer than you think it should. It is easier to hit your hours if you are keeping regular office hours and adequately preparing for depositions, hearings, etc. 4) Have a positive attitude. Since perfection is not the expectation, being trainable and adaptable is important. If you are ready to work, prepared, keeping your time, and are bringing positive energy, you are on your way to becoming a successful lawyer.
