Ever found yourself tangled in the mesh of roles within your family business or a venture you co-founded? You're not alone. The clearer the roles, responsibilities, and authority are defined, the smoother the operation. Drawing on a straightforward comparison: consider how an airline operates. Every role, from the captain to the gate agents and baggage handlers, is clearly defined. Everyone knows precisely what they are responsible for, reducing overlaps and ensuring efficiency. 🛫 Recently, while at an airport, the synchronization amidst the bustling environment reminded me of the importance of clarity in business operations, especially in spaces where personal and professional lines often blur. Here’s a thought. Why not take a page out of the airline industry's playbook? Define roles and authority diligently in your business. Doing so can not only streamline operations but also preserve and enhance relationships within the team. Imagine the impact it could have: a family or joint business running as seamlessly as a pleasant and on-time flight. It's worth a shot! Have you experienced challenges due to unclear roles in your business? How did you address them? #BusinessManagement #FamilyBusiness #Leadership #OperationalEfficiency #RoleClarity

After reading 'Turn the Ship Around' I've been obsessed with devolved decision making and empowering leadership. It's something we practice strongly in the cockpit through CRM (crew resource management) and contributes immensely to Aviation's impeccable safety record. I've been trying hard to take these principles and apply them to the office as well. Empowering leadership is not just a philosophy; it's a commitment to fostering a culture of collaboration and shared responsibility. 🤝 At EasyJet, we believe in devolved leadership, where every team member, regardless of seniority, is not just encouraged but empowered to make decisions and take agency. Embracing devolved leadership means embracing diversity in thought and approach. Each team member brings a unique perspective, contributing to a richer, more comprehensive vision for success. When individuals feel a sense of ownership, they are naturally more invested in the outcomes. By entrusting our team with decision-making authority, we cultivate a spirit of ownership that fuels enthusiasm, accountability, and a shared commitment to excellence. Devolved leadership enables us to adapt swiftly to challenges and changes. When decision-making is distributed, we become a more agile organization, capable of navigating complex landscapes with confidence and resilience. At EasyJet, we're not just building a successful business; we're cultivating a community of empowered leaders. Together, we are redefining what it means to lead and succeed in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment. 💪✨ #DevolvedLeadership #Empowerment #LeadershipInAction

#satyavachan - 2nd post / 2024 Came across a very witty post from Steffen Roehn on the Glassdoor Best Places to Work for 2024 list today and got curious to read up more. While browsing the list of companies in the 2024 edition, I came across this section titled "Top CEOs 2021 list" - essentially a list based on Approval Rates for the CEO from the current and past employees of an org. The Top 15 names have 96% or higher approval rates!!! The list has 2 Indian-origin CEOs - Satya Nadella & Shantanu Narayen (a moment of pride for me and am sure many other Indians). However, one name that took me back to a case study I read during my MBA days (now that's 2.5 decades ago!) was that of Gary Kelly of #southwestairlines. Gary enjoys an enviable 98% approval rate and has co-created the iconic culture at Southwest that many airline companies have tried mimicking but have not been successful. Did some more research and came across this very powerful para from an online post from 2012 - **Many industry observers doubted Southwest’s culture could survive without Kelleher at the helm, but it has fared well under the lower-key leadership of CEO Gary Kelly. “Our people are our single greatest strength and most enduring long-term competitive advantage,” Kelly says. “All of our people do know what is right, and they feel empowered to act on it. That hasn’t changed.”** Here's a short yet fascinating video (2.5 mins) where Southwest's Founder and Chairman Emeritus Herb Kelleher and Gary Kelly talk about Southwest, the future, and thoughts on Leadership. This is a 2014 video but still very very relevant for most - https://lnkd.in/dbjrEpWG Key messages - 1) On change management - if things change faster outside your company than they change inside your company, you have something to worry about. "What we are talking about here is your future. If you don't change, you don't have One!" 2) On Culture - "Even if we wanted our employees to stop serving our customers, I just don't think they can do that. It's in their hearts" ❤️ 3) On Leadership - "it means a number of things but mostly to me it means just caring about our people" Thanks Steffen Roehn for the post...I learnt (rehashed rather) something new today. BTW, congrats to you & team Bain & Company for topping the chart :) #customerisking #employeefirst #culture #leadershiplegacy

TBDispatch Vol. 4: The Street Smart CEO Today I was reminded of how powerful it is when leaders have “street smarts”. I was chatting with former client and current friend Tom Gallagher, a former CEO in the Dairy Industry, and found myself complementing him on having not only “book smarts” but “street smarts”. So what is that exactly? It’s not easily explained but you know it when you see it. It’s the ability to speak plainly, to quickly discern and assess one’s character, to identify a threat or an opportunity, and to approach things with a sense of pragmatism and realism. Another leader I had the privilege to work with who displays this quality is Oscar Munoz, former CEO of United Airlines. Watching him interact with front line employees was really something else. You could sense that he felt just as comfortable in the break room of baggage handlers as he did in the corporate board room with executives. Street smarts, in my opinion is a mix of EQ combined with the kind of instinct and intuition that you get from being out in the real world. I’ve always been impressed by leaders who have preserved this quality as they rise through the ranks. Oh. and whoever the artist is who came up with the genius idea of a boxer with Airpod “gloves”, I bet their street smarts are pretty good as well. #EQ #Experience #Leadership #Streetsmarts #CEO

Why does a ship sail? Is it the compelling strength of the wind? The captain's skilled hands? Or the destination's irresistible allure? In actuality, it's the vision of the harbor that propels forward. Likewise, in business or life, it's VISION that fuels our journey. And as leaders embracing this vision, we become the CAPTAINS of our ships, charting courses and stirring through the unpredictable seas of challenges. ⚓️ Set the Vision: It shapes your course in the vast ocean of possibilities. 🔭 Spotlight the Vision: Bring your team under the umbrella of the unified goal - make them see what YOU see. 🗺️ Navigate towards the Vision: Every micro-decision should stir your ship toward the desired harbor. The journey might be tough - the seas might turn choppy, the wind might turn against us, and shadows of uncertainty might cloud our paths. But, with the lighthouse of VISION guiding us, we never lose our way. Cherish the power that comes with being a leader. With your decisions illuminated by the vision, let's sail our teams to the harbors of success. Remember - the harbor might not always come to the ship, but a great captain can always make the ship reach the harbor. #Leadership #Vision #DecisionMaking
