NASA Rockets Set to Probe the Moon's Shadow During the Upcoming Eclipse... As the Moon wedges itself between Earth and Sun, temporarily dimming the day’s light over parts of our planet, three rockets will take to the skies to observe how those brief moments of darkness affect Earth’s upper atmosphere. On April 8, NASA will launch three sounding rockets from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia to study the disturbances in the ionosphere during the solar eclipse. The rockets will launch at three different times; 45 minutes before, during, and 45 minutes after the peak time of the eclipse, according to NASA. #technology#NASA#solarsystem#solareclipse

Longer time of totality, the path crossing over more densely populated cities, and 99% of people in the US can at least see a partial (don't settle for the partial, go to totality!). This upcoming eclipse is going to be something special!! Check out this article from NASA to learn more! https://lnkd.in/gCXB3Hzf

Earth is set to get a temporary second moon when a small asteroid, 2024 PT5, begins orbiting the planet from Sept. 29 to Nov. 25. Discovered in August by NASA-funded researchers, the asteroid will follow a horseshoe-shaped orbit around Earth for 56.6 days before returning to its path around the sun. This phenomenon, known as a “mini-moon,” has occurred before with other near-Earth objects. 2024 PT5 is larger than previous mini-moons and is expected to return to Earth’s orbit in 2055. While it won’t be visible to amateur astronomers, professionals will be able to track it. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration ISRO #Astronomy #MiniMoon #EarthOrbit #2024PT5 #NASA

🚀 Europa Clipper: The Next Giant Leap in Space Exploration! 🌌 This October 2024, NASA’s Europa Clipper mission will launch, embarking on an incredible journey to explore Jupiter’s icy moon, Europa. 🌍 Why Europa? The answer is simple: Water. 🌊 Europa’s subsurface ocean could hold clues to life beyond Earth. By investigating its ice-covered surface, NASA aims to unlock the mysteries of this distant moon, where water may flow beneath the surface. Stay tuned as we make waves in the quest for knowledge and uncover the secrets of our solar system. 🌠 🔗 Learn more: go.nasa.gov/makewaves @EuropaClipper NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration #GoEuropaClipper #NASA #SpaceExploration #EuropaClipper #WaterOnEuropa

"This image features a relatively small galaxy known as UGC 5189A, which is located about 150 million light-years away in the constellation Leo. This galaxy was observed by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope to study a supernova explosion in 2010 known as SN 2010jl. This particular supernova is notable because it was an exceptionally luminous supernova event. In fact, over a period of three years, SN 2010jl released at least 2.5 billion times more visible energy than our Sun emitted over the same timeframe across all wavelengths." 🌌 Learn more in this #NASA article: https://lnkd.in/gMxHQm7D 📸 : ESA/Hubble & NASA, A. NASA's Europa Clipper has successfully launched, and it's heading toward Jupiter's moon Europa to learn if the ocean hiding beneath its icy surface can support life. Read the below article to learn how U-M and UCLA scientists helped discover the moon's ocean with data from the Galileo spacecraft, and how they will help determine the ocean's habitability with Clipper. https://lnkd.in/g8maCSUB

Per NASA: View the Sun through eclipse glasses or a handheld solar viewer during the partial eclipse phases before and after totality. You can view the eclipse directly without proper eye protection only when the Moon completely obscures the Sun’s bright face – during the brief and spectacular period known as totality. (You’ll know it’s safe when you can no longer see any part of the Sun through eclipse glasses or a solar viewer.) As soon as you see even a little bit of the bright Sun reappear after totality, immediately put your eclipse glasses back on or use a handheld solar viewer to look at the Sun.

#OTD in History, on January 6, 1969, Deke Slayton, the head of NASA's astronaut office, held a meeting with the future #Apollo11 crew - Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. During this meeting, he informed them that their upcoming mission, set for July, might involve a lunar landing. That was a current schedule as Apollo 8 had recently completed the first crewed mission around the Moon, and Apollo 9 and Apollo 10 were scheduled to test lunar landing equipment (Apollo 9 on Earth orbit) and conduct a lunar rehearsal (Apollo 10) On January 9, 1969, #NASA officially announced the crew for the Apollo 11 mission. The fifth crewed Apollo mission, aimed to achieve President John F. Kennedy's goal „before this decade is out, of landing a Man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth”. The following day, NASA introduced the Apollo 11 crew during a press conference at the (now called) Johnson Space Center in Houston. NASA is Seeking US-Based Partnerships for VIPER Mission🌕🤝 NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration is inviting U.S. communities to collaborate on the Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER) mission, which will explore the Moon's south pole for volatiles. The partnership offers an opportunity to complete systems-level testing, integrate and land VIPER, and conduct a science/exploration campaign on the lunar surface. VIPER’s mission will consequently last for 100 Earth days on the lunar surface while surviving on a full charge up to 50 hours of darkness and ~9 hours of operations/observations in Permanently Shadowed Regions (PSRs), areas of high probability for hosting water ice/volatiles. 🔗 Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gdcJu4cH #SpaceExploration #NASA #VIPER #LunarMission
